The third edition of the International Girls in ICT Day in Nigeria was celebrated on Thursday, June 19, 2014 by e-Business Life Communication Limited in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
We commenced this year's celebration on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 with a training and competition in Graphics Designing at Chams Computer City, Ikeja in Lagos State where a total of nine secondary schools participated.
The Grand Finale took place on Thursday, June 19 2014 at the Golden Gate Palace Hotel, Ikoyi Lagos. A total of 123 Senior Secondary School (SS1) Girls (equivalent of Grade 10) from12 schools attended from both government and private schools across Lagos state.
The theme of this year's edition was "Bridging the Gender Digital Divide". Activities of the day included talks on "Seeing Technology Careers from the Inside," delivered by two smart young ladies from both Google Nigeria and Microsoft Nigeria. They took time to demystify careers in technology and made the young girls see why a career in technology is "do-able."
Other speakers at the event included representatives of NITDA, Huawei Technologies and Main One Cable company.
In continuation of what we started last year, the induction of deserving women ICT professionals into the Tech Women Hall of Fame (Award Ceremony), three women were inducted this year.
The presentation of awards was followed by the quiz session in which the students were drilled on questions in mathematics, computer science and social media. Prizes were presented to winners of the quiz competition as well as the winner of the graphics design competition, which was held earlier in the week.
In conclusion the students were admonished to challenge themselves to do the unimaginable, achieve the unthinkable and bridge this gap in the process, for it is what the heart conceives that the mind and body will deliver.
