ITU and Korea to assist Caribbean and Asia-Pacific countries
in national spectrum management
Busan, 07 November 2014
- The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
and the Republic of Korea signed a cooperation
agreement on 6 November to assist developing
countries in the Caribbean to establish national
spectrum management master plans.
This is the first ITU Project
in the Americas Region which is funded by the
Republic of Korea.
Similar projects are being undertaken in
Africa and in the Asia Pacific Region.
On the same day, the Republic
of Korea signed the extension of an existing
agreement, put in place in December 2013, to assist
developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region
design and implement a new spectrum management
framework.
The two agreements were signed
in Busan, South Korea, during the
ITU Plenipotentiary Conference.
The Korean Ministry of Science,
ICT and Future Planning is to contribute 150,000,000
Korean Won (approximately 142,000 dollars) to each
project.
“As the leading nation in high
speed internet connectivity worldwide, the Republic
of Korea is in an excellent position to share its
experiences and at the same time assist developing
countries improve their internet connectivity and
help reduce the digital divide,” said Brahima Sanou,
Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development
Bureau, welcoming the agreements.

of Korea appreciates ITU's work in tackling the
digital divide”, said
Sanghun Lee, the Director of Multilateral
Cooperation Division of the Ministry. “The ITU
Telecommunication Development Bureau is well placed
to respond to the development needs of the Member
States and Korea is committed to contributing to
resolving the digital divide.”
