ITU Global Symposium for Regulators set to debate hot issues in wireless, broadband, data sharing

Geneva, 11 September 2012 – ITU’s annual Global Symposium for Regulators, taking place this year in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 2-4 October 2012, will provide a unique forum to debate a host of hot topics in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), including net neutrality, innovative spectrum policies to support the booming demand for wireless services, cloud computing and data privacy, and broadband implementation strategies for less developed markets.

Organized by the International Telecommunication Union, the specialized agency of the United Nations for ICTs, the meeting is the pre-eminent global gathering of the ICT regulatory and policy-making community. Its purpose is to foster productive cross-stakeholder dialogue between regulators, policy makers and industry leaders.

The event is being hosted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), under the high Patronage of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. It will be chaired by TRCSL Chairman Lalith Weeratunga.

Journalists are urged to accredit online now to attend this prestigious event. Formal accreditation prior to the event is essential to gain access to the event venue. Please note that accreditation will close on Friday 21 September. There will be no accreditation onsite, and no access to the venue will be permitted without a badge.

Why:

With the theme of ‘Why Regulate in a Networked Society?’ this year’s programme includes an Opening Debate, open to media, focusing on transnational regulatory issues in a converged digital era.

Who:

Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa will officially open the event on Monday 2 October. High-level guests include leaders from the regulatory community, industry bodies and the private sector, including ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun Touré, ITU Deputy Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau Brahima Sanou, and Director of ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau, François Rancy.

Media Information:

Accreditation is essential for media, broadcast crews and industry analysts to participate onsite. Accreditation closes 21 September.

Note to Media:
The first two days of the symposium comprise the Global Regulators-Industry Dialogue (GRID, 2-3 October), and are open to regulators, policy makers and members of ITU’s Development Sector. The third day (4 October) is a closed session open to regulators and policy makers only. The morning session on Monday 2 October is open to media, culminating in a press conference scheduled to take place at 12:45pm.
