Problem Artificial Intelligence is advancing faster than societies, workforces, and
Addressed governments are prepared for worldwide. As AI reshapes economies,
public services, and daily life, communities everywhere—especially in
vulnerable, rural, and underserved regions—face the risk of being left
behind without a fair opportunity to adapt or influence the future. Artists
from historically disadvantaged communities are not properly cited for
their work in AI Art Generators (Small, 2023), culturally-sounding names
receive low pay options based on large language learning models (Haim,
Salinas, and Nyarko, 2024), Black people are labeled as future criminals
in comparison to White people (Angwin et al., 2016), and Black women
are consistently mischaracterized or not recognized in facial recognition
software (Buolamwini and Gebru, 1998; Najibi, 2020). At the same time, key
decisions about AI systems are often made far from the people they affect,
without transparency, accountability, or respect for local cultures, values,
and needs (Sources). Without a trusted and skilled workforce of public-
minded technologists to bridge AI innovations with community priorities,
nations risk deepening inequality, eroding public trust, and losing control
over how AI shapes their societies. We must equip people everywhere,
not just those in major technology hubs, to lead, govern, and thrive in the
                                         emerging AI-driven world.
