ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau deploys satellite telecommunications equipment to Papua New Guinea

On 7 August 2023, the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau deployed vital satellite telecommunications equipment consisting of 10 Iridium satellite phones and 5 Inmarsat BGAN terminals to support the humanitarian work in Papua New Guinea after the devastation caused by the Mount Bagana eruption.

“It is my hope that this equipment will play a pivotal role in facilitating coordinated evacuation efforts of communities at risk that live near Mount Bagana,” said Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau. “Restoring communication services in the aftermath of a disaster is critical to coordinate humanitarian action. Digital technologies are key for ensuring timely flow of vital information in the aftermath of disasters: we are committed, now more than ever, to supporting countries in disaster risk reduction and management to help save lives.”
