Designed for girls in years 9-12, this program gives participants the chance to speak to current students, hear from women in the industry, and get involved in workshops and demonstrations.
It is a chance to educate, inspire and empower young women, celebrate women in the industry and raise awareness of the need for girls to step up to the fun and inventive field of ICT.
60 students attended from Canberra, New South Wales and Victoria.
Activities included:
- Human Centred Computing Workshop - students participate in a number of activities that are accessible from our website and at the end generate a web page to share with friends and family. The activities use eye trackers to record physiological signals to infer humans' mental states, which is a key component of the activities. We conduct interdisciplinary research, combining computing, art, science, music, security, psychology, social network analysis, digital humanities and biologically inspired computing.
- IMB OzLabs workshop - Interactive activity using playing cards that simulates key aspects of our work in the OzLabs team - working with computer architecture, optimising computational performance, and being involved in Open Source software. Premade components laser cut/3D printed into kits for the girls to assemble on the day - they should be able to take home small, light-up "Tux" penguins which they've built and customised themselves.

Topic: Universities can facilitate economic growth by collaborating with industry for utilisation of scientific knowledge leading to socio-economic gains.
Topic: Driving Simulator
Demonstration: Showing 3D reconstructions of insects from the Australian National Insect Collection. To display them, we use a form of Virtual Reality called 'haptics' that lets you touch the 3D virtual models.
Topic: Demonstrations of how computer vision and video processing are being used in devices to restore sight to people with blindness
