Dedicated to the International Girls in ICT Day

The Videoconference Seminar for the CIS dedicated to the International Girls in ICT Day was held by the ITU Area Office for the CIS in Moscow, Russian Federation, on 24 April 2014. The seminar was organized in cooperation with Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI) and moderated by Mr. Orozobek Kaiykov, Head, ITU Area Office for the CIS. The Seminar was attended by 98 participants from 6 countries (including 16 on-site participants and over 80 remote participants).
The seminar discussions in the ITU Area Office were attended by representatives of Moscow-based MTUCI university, Rostelecom company, International Academy of Communications, Scientific and Research Institute of Radio (NIIR), as well as representatives of Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan Republic, Beltelecom company (Republic of Belarus), and Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications under Kyrgyz State Technical University n.a. I. Razzakov, who came to Moscow to participate in the Girls in ICT event.
After delivering the video greetings of the ITU Secretary-General, Dr. Hamadoun Touré and BDT/ITU Director, Mr. Brahima Sanou, welcoming speeches were delivered by Ms. Anna Bradu, Director, Moldo-Korean Centre of Information and Access, on behalf of ICT of the Republic of Moldova, and by Mr. Orozobek Kaiykov, Head of ITU Area Office.
1st Session covered the goals and functions of international organizations and, in particular the role of ITU in development of Information and Communication Technologies, as well as the role of women in ICT. The topics were presented by Mr. Orozobek Kaiykov and Ms. Veronica Cretu, President, Institute of Open Government, Republic of Moldova (who participated in the session via videoconference system remotely). Also, Mr. Kaiykov delivered a presentation dedication to the issue of e-waste and the role of women in solving the problem.
2nd Session was dedicated to career opportunities for women in ICT and presented some success stories. In particular, Ms. Anastasia Ositis, President, ASVT Group; Director General, Russian Network of Business Service CJSC, Honored Communications Person; President, International Academy of Communications, a person, who is very well known in the ICT world, told to the audience of her story in ICT. In particular, she highlighted the necessity of continuous learning. Also, she noted that it is necessary to have a quota for women for the management level posts, since men are still prioritized for decision-making positions and have better career prospects.
Ms. N.Mochu from NIIR (Russian Federation), noting the significance of the Girls in ICT initiative and of the event organized by ITU Area Office for CIS, stressed that it is necessary, within human capacity building programmes, to attract more women to ICT. During the 2nd Session, Ms. Gayane Valchevska, representing Cisco Academy joined the discussion via telephone.
Some events dedicated to the Girls in ICT day took place in the CIS countries. In particular, the Odessa National Academy of Telecommunication (ONAT) organized a trivia game dedication to Girls in ICT Day. A Girls in ICT event was organized in Minsk, Republic of Belarus, within the framework of 21st International Specialized Forum on Telecommunications, Information and Bank Technologies (TIBO-2014), which is being held these days. Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications under Kyrgyz State Technical University n.a. I. Razzakov held a competition of essays on ICT for students. The four winners of the competition obtained Ipads from Megacom company.
