Summary:
|
Telecommunication operators are migrating core services, including voice and video, from traditional circuit-switched networks to IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures. This shift moves from hierarchical control mechanisms utilized in legacy networks to the flat control architecture inherent in IMS systems.
In IMS interconnection, the flat architecture introduces specific reliability considerations. Failures affecting interconnection elements—such as the Interconnection Border Control Function/ Transition Gateway (IBCF/TrGW) nodes, or interconnection links—can cause widespread service interruption between operator networks.
The establishment of geographically redundant backup paths is common practice to ensure service continuity. However, for large-scale operators that maintain multiple interconnection points distributed in different geographical zones, the implementation of dedicated backup nodes for each point presents challenges of increased costs and heightened operational complexity.
This draft Recommendation specifies a shared backup interconnection architecture which enables a set of primary interconnection points to utilize a common backup interconnection point located at a geographically separate location. This approach maintains service reliability while improving resource utilization efficiency and reducing operational complexity through the use of shared backup resources.
