Summary: This document is aiming to initiate a new work item on ITU-T L.Env_storage“Environmental Impact Assessment Guideline for Data Storage Devices”. Although servers and data storage products share certain similarities in environment sustainability impacts and mitigation strategies, the current standards are not entirely applicable to data storage devices. For instance, in carbon footprint assessments, the lifespan and ownership lifecycle of different storage media vary significantly, and there are differences in the assessment thresholds and functional performance requirements for specific products. This recommendation is to adopt multidimensional assessment approach to comprehensively consider the environmental impact of different storage devices from multiple dimensions. Such assessments not only provide a basis for developing specific environmental impact mitigation strategies but also help identify climate impact hotspots for different storage devices across various dimensions. Besides, the scope of this standard also includes developing and implementing effective sustainability impact mitigation strategies based on the assessment criteria for data centers. By comparing and analyzing the environmental impact of different type of storage devices, data centers can adopt more targeted strategies to reduce the negative environmental impact of storage devices and drive the entire industry toward a more environmentally friendly and sustainable direction. The work considers relevant existing frameworks such as L.1400-series of recommendations (in particular L.1410), ISO 14067, the GHG protocol ICT supplement and potential related server related initiatives to keep consistent with those.
