Summary:
|
This proposal calls for ITU-T Recommendation focused on the recovery of materials from end-of-life telecom infrastructure equipment. Unlike consumer Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products, telecom assets are centrally deployed as part of large-scale networking infrastructure, professionally maintained, and returned in bulk at end-of-life, making them well suited for systematic recovery through formal systems. Current practices, such as auction-based disposal, often channel equipment into informal markets, leading to the permanent loss of valuable CRMs and SRMs, as well as exposure of manufacturers’ intellectual property (IP).
The proposed Recommendation will provide clear guidance for establishing secure and standardized recovery systems that ensure traceable and authorized access to end-of-life telecom products. It will also support the adoption of advanced recycling technologies, the development of CRM-specific recovery methodologies, and the creation of frameworks for SRM integration into manufacturing. By enabling consistent, high-quality, and transparent recovery processes, the telecom sector can reduce dependence on virgin resources, safeguard intellectual property, and strengthen its contribution to global circular economy and sustainability goals.
