Summary:

Under the goal and vision of sustainable development, more purchasers have put forward higher requirements for the environmental friendliness level of data centers. For instance, they have set more demands on the renewable energy level, carbon emission level, and resource recycling utilization of data centers. The early PUE index has played an important role in improving the energy efficiency of data centers. However, this index is limited to energy utilization and has very limited effect on the improvement of the environmental sustainability of data centers in terms of renewable energy utilization and resource recycling. Currently, there is a lack of an overall index system for evaluating the carbon emissions of data centers.
This recommendation introduces muti-dimensional environmental metrics system over the life cycle data centre, which is consisted of dimension of energy efficiency, resource efficiency, carbon emission efficiency and environmental impact, and details the metrics in each dimension, including:
(1) Energy efficiency:Power usage effectiveness, datacenter infrastructure efficiency, IT equipment energy efficiency for servers, computational Efficiency, cooling efficiency ratio, energy reuse factor;
(2) Resource efficiency: Land-use intensity, IT equipment density, infrastructure usage effectiveness, IT equipments load rate, water usage effectiveness, reuse and recycling rate;
(3) Carbon emission efficiency: Renewable energy factor, carbon usage effectiveness;
(4) Environmental impact: Outdoor noise, refrigerants usage amount, air pollutants emissions intensity, toxic substances emissions, non-hazardous treatment rate.
Then, it proposes environmental metrics of concern in the data center life cycle stages and guidelines on management of these metrics.
The purpose of this recommendation is to establish a universally applicable indicator system for evaluating the environmental impact of data centers, to assess the environmental sustainability impact of data centers from different aspects, to reduce environmental pollution caused by data centers, maintain ecological balance, and protect human health.
