Summary: Soil is one of the most important components of ecosystems and plays a crucial role in biodiversity, climate stability, water management, food security, and human survival and development. In environmental science, soil environment is mainly categorized into agricultural soil, industrial soil, urban soil, and natural soil. Nowadays, global soil quality is deteriorating rapidly as a result of human activities such as over-farming, pollution, industrialization, and urbanization, leading to soil degradation and threatening vital ecosystem services. Therefore, soil protection and remediation are becoming increasingly important. The traditional approach to soil protection and remediation is not only time-consuming and labour-intensive, but also relies heavily on expert experience. It usually starts with field visits in which samples are taken at designated locations using hand tools, and then the samples are sent to a laboratory to be analysed for chemical and physical properties. It then relies on expert experience to decide on strategies for soil protection (if soil is uncontaminated) or methods for soil remediation (if soil is contaminated). Compared to traditional approach, through utilizing technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, networks, and artificial intelligence (AI), it is possible to reduce the reliance on manpower and expert experience, as well as improve the efficiency and effectiveness of soil protection and remediation. The applications of IoT-based soil environmental protection and remediation include integrated air-to-ground soil environmental monitoring, automated soil contamination assessment, future soil quality prediction, intelligent recommendation for soil protection strategics and remediation methods, and intelligent tracing of soil contaminant sources. Therefore, it is very helpful for the environmental protection and sustainable development to initiate a new work item on “Requirements of IoT-based soil environmental protection and remediation”.
