Message from the ITU Secretary General on the historic transition of the IANA functions to the global community
Geneva, 3 October 2016.
I congratulate the United States government for successfully implementing the transition of the
IANA functions to the global community. I also commend ICANN and all stakeholders involved in the formulation of the detailed transition plan.
This is an important milestone in the management of critical Internet resources, and aligned with the principles agreed by the World Summit on the Information Society in 2003 and 2005.
The Internet is a global public good, and a key enabler in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, it is important to ensure the active participation of all nations and peoples in its development and use. ITU looks forward to working together with all stakeholders in ensuring a more equitable and accessible Internet for all.
