ITU's new management team, led by Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, was formally inaugurated on 15 January 2015 at ITU headquarters in Geneva in the presence of Permanent Representatives of Member States to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Heads of UN agencies.

"The remarkable history of ITU exemplifies its stellar role in connecting the world to the most advanced and innovative means of communication, from the days of the telegraph to the telephone, television, Internet and mobile broadband, which now allows us to be in touch anytime, anywhere with friends, family, colleagues and even inanimate objects," said Zhao.

At the ceremony Mr Zhao paid tribute to the founding members of the Union and to the communications experts who have dedicated their lives to connecting the world ever since the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in Paris on 17 May 1865, which led to ITU's creation. "I am confident that ITU will continue to meet the challenges ahead as well as embracing new opportunities in a fast-changing ICT market place – backed by the deep knowledge and expertise of our staff and membership, and our proven ability over 150 years to adapt, reform and innovate so as to keep pace with evolving market demands," he said.
