Question 4/13

Question 4/13 - Identification of evolving IMT systems and beyond
(Continuation of Question 10/13)
Motivation
IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced have been among the most important ITU initiatives for four study periods, spanning all three sectors. Since evolving IMT systems are being standardized by a number of recognized SDOs through their participation in Partnership projects, Q.10/13 (as well as its predecessors) has been working on facilitating the recognition of those systems and their adoption by the broader ITU community. Around 20 Recommendations under the responsibility of Q.10/13 [2009 – 2012 study period] are either in force or in its approved work programme.
As the mobile systems evolve beyond the original requirements set for IMT-2000, the SDOs will continue to deliver various releases of their respective systems. The ITU development of networks in the future and the continuation of the FMC work will further propel the evolution of common core networks. New Recommendations will need to be produced to identify those evolving IMT systems, specifically for IMT-Advanced and beyond.
This Question shall be responsible for the Q.174x-series of Recommendations.
Question
Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:
  • What architectures, detailed specifications and releases have been and will be produced by recognized SDOs which make up the evolving IMT systems and beyond?
  • What enhancements to existing Recommendations are required to provide energy savings directly or indirectly in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) or in other industries? What enhancements to developing or new Recommendations are required to provide such energy savings?
Tasks
Tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop Recommendations identifying the architecture as well as detailed specifications of each release (version) of each evolving IMT family member making reference to relevant specifications produced by the ITU-T recognized SDOs.
  • Recommendations shall be produced for the following evolving IMT family members:
    • GSM evolved UMTS core network with UTRAN/GERAN access network
    • ANSI-41 evolved core network with cdma2000 access network
    • Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network with LTE-Advanced access network.
