Question 13/13 - Requirements, mechanisms and frameworks for packet data network evolution
(Continuation of Question 20/13)
Motivation
Through the development of Internet and NGN, Packet data network such as IP network has been applied widely. However, as the rapid development of economy and technology, new requirements for packet data network have emerged, such as scalability, reliability, controllability, manageability, virtualization, security, green communication and high efficient content delivery, etc., which cannot be met by current packet data network technologies. Therefore, facing these requirements, it is meaningful to research the roadmap of packet data network evolution and new technologies of packet data network which reserve the strong points and prevent deficiencies of IP network.
The objectives of this Question are to focus on the evolution of the topmost part of transport stratum (low part of transport stratum is transport network which is developed in SG 15), to develop the requirements and roadmap of packet data network evolution, to define the potential candidate mechanisms and corresponding frameworks for packet data network evolution based on these requirements. The potential candidate mechanism and frameworks can meet current and near future requirements (defined in Recommendation ITU-T Y.2601) of packet data network and support smoothly evolution from current IP networks, which can be applied in current network environment and also in future network environment, and can supports new services, such as new telecom services, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, mobile Internet, smart network and Content Delivery Network (CDN), etc.
During the last two study periods, several Recommendations about packet data network evolution, including the requirements (Y.2601) and high level architecture (Y.2611, Y.2612) of Future Packet Based Network(FPBN) had been developed. FPBN is composed of packet based path layer networks (as defined in [Recommendation ITU-T G.805] and [Recommendation ITU-T G.809]) in the transport stratum, is the target network of packet data network evolution in the near future, which is different from Future Networks that faces a long term future requirements and is a huge topic still at very initial research stage with the scope covering all levels of networks and applications. Based on these Recommendations, candidate technologies of FPBN, including Packet Telecom Data Network(PTDN) and independent Scalable Control Plane (iSCP), had been studied. The roadmaps of PTDN and iSCP have been established, and several Recommendations of PTDN (Y.2613, Y.2614) and iSCP (Y.2621) have been published.
In next study period, this Question will continue to develop new requirements for packet data network evolution, to collect new possible candidate technologies of packet data network evolution, to develop corresponding Recommendations based on Y.2601, Y.2611 and Y.2612, especially continue to develop PTDN series and iSCP series Recommendations.
Recommendations under responsibility of this Question include, but are not limited to: Y.2601, Y.2611, Y.2612, Y.2613, Y.2614, Y.2621.
An up-to-date status of work under this Question is contained in the SG 13 Work Program
