Leveraging connectivity everywhere to drive sustainable growth in Africa region
GSOA/Smart Africa
Session 291
We are living at a time of undeniable progress in terms of technology advancement and expanding the reach of connectivity. Still, much of Africa remains unconnected. As we have seen from the Covid Pandemic, this is no longer an acceptable situation and actions must be taken to bring meaningful connectivity to the millions of people across Africa who are still on the wrong side of the digital divide.
Everyone has heard about the potential of satellites for Africa, but the digital gap and severe inequalities remain. Are satellites too expensive or complex? Is the regulatory regime across Africa failing to create an enabling environment for satellite connectivity? Are policymakers still pinning their hopes on terrestrial technologies that may take years to deliver?
This session will explore some of the successful satellite projects that are transforming lives in Africa and look at future projects that are in the planning. Expect a deep dive into some of the critical issues that need to be addressed such as adoption and take-up of available services, securing a return on investment, device availability and ensuring affordable services for Africa’s most disadvantaged citizens.
