Devastating floods occur bi-annually in Tanzania. Dar Ramani Huria – ‘Dar Open Map’ in Swahili, is a community mapping project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The project works with local people to provide training in the technical skills needed to map Dar’s infrastructure for flood resilience planning. Local community members use open source software on basic Android phones to map the drainage systems, in order to better understand how to improve these to reduce vulnerability to flooding in informal urban neighbourhoods. The objective of this project, implemented by Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, is to improve urban planning and risk reduction by providing open, accessible maps to all members of society.
