Model Training and – Supports federated analytics for privacy-preserving data analysis
Fine-Tuning across decentralized datasets.
– Utilizes federated averaging techniques and secure aggregation
protocols for decentralized training.
– Incorporates privacy-preserving enhancements (e.g., differential
privacy) and supports heterogeneous model fine-tuning across data
silos.
– Additionally, federated inference can be developed, enabling
predictions without transferring data from heterogeneous sources.

2 Use Case Description
21 Description
CAFEIN is a cutting-edge federated learning platform developed at CERN. It addresses the
challenge of training robust AI models in scenarios where data is distributed and sensitive.
By enabling collaborative model training without centralising data, the platform enhances
privacy, regulatory compliance, and data sovereignty. CAFEIN integrates state-of-the-art
federated learning protocols with privacy-enhancing technologies, thus providing a scalable,
secure, and efficient solution for multi-institutional AI projects. CAFEIN is a comprehensive, fully
hosted platform—not just a framework—that provides an integrated software framework, robust
software infrastructure, and dedicated server-side hardware infrastructure. The platform is
hosted, operated, and managed by CERN, ensuring that it benefits from CERN’s internationally
recognized network security, as well as its status as a non-profit international organization with
non-military application principles.
