• 2_ To validate a modular, personalized and distributed XR Toolkit for enhancing human-
centered manufacturing;
• 3_ To validate and commercialize the XR Toolkit towards sustainable resource
consumption, effective production and empowerment of workers. 4.5: Manufacturing
XTENDIT represents a transformative advancement in the integration of technologies within
the industrial sector, particularly focusing on the development of adaptive, personalized, and
distributed XR industrial machine interfaces under the framework of Industry 5.0. XTENDIT
integrates a multiplexed technology integration approach that will jointly leverage
• user ergonomics, by using pre-collected human factors data on personal values and
attitudes towards automation, including trust, acceptance, reluctance, fear and anxiety that
are collected as individual dispositions by mean of an ex-ante self-reported questionnaire
on the workers;
• machine Information, by integrating pre-existing detailed information about the current
machines;
• contextual Information about the work scenario, including both the user scenario,
i.e. whether the user is programming, supervising, performing manual operations, or
maintaining equipment; and the productivity, waste, and efficiency data collected through
IoT components.
As for workforce resilience improvement, XTENDIT product innovation will be based on a
significant collection of EU-representative ergonomics data related to human-machine
interaction during testing machine measurement. In particular, XTENDIT worker centricity
relies on the investigation of users' psychological (knowledge, skills, and attitude towards
automation), and cognitive dimensions (learning, inspection, awareness, decision-making), by
means of a self-reported questionnaire. The skills assessment will be provided before, during
and after the training with the XR Toolkit in order to measure improvements in participants' skills
and in improving productivity but also the user experience and engagement level. According
to the knowledge collected during the training needs’ analysis, the trainers might develop
context intelligent training - trainees will be engaged in on-field AR interactions that sense
and respond to the environment, allowing them to exercise with relevant situations that may
occur during production.
On this basis, XTENDIT elaborates a novel XR and MR (extended and mixed reality) interface
design paradigm to accomplish the empowerment of workers and the optimization of
production by employing information provision and dynamic support to decision-making in
an effective and timely manner, according to the operator’s physical and cognitive ergonomics.
At the methodological level, XTENDIT implements a unique interaction design-led method
for resilient and human-centered Advanced Manufacturing, based on mixed materials and
prototypes, and on the application of a new, innovative, and multidisciplinary method for
product innovation, also including human body interaction, with the possibility of integrating
wearable technologies to adapt the interfaces on the basis of situational data, e.g. the user
location.
At the organizational level, XTENDIT represents a case of the modernization of equipment and
protocols for research, assessment, and modeling industrial production operations, including
machine interfaces’ adaptations that are meaningfully rich for the end users.
XTENDIT significantly reduces the burden of discomfort, and, consequently, the delays, the
blocks and the inefficiencies of a not integrated human-automation organization. The product
