2 Use Case Description
21 Description
Accurate wind forecasting plays a pivotal role in optimizing renewable energy deployment and
balancing smart grid operations. However, traditional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)
systems, though effective on a macro scale, face limitations in real-time performance, spatial
resolution, and computational cost.
This AI-driven use case addresses those limitations by integrating deep learning models—
LSTM, CNN, and RNN—into wind speed and direction forecasting pipelines. These models
are trained on real-time and historical datasets from IoT sensors, meteorological stations, and
satellite feeds. The project is also aligned with ECMWF’s AI-based Forecasting System (AIFS)
to strengthen predictions using global atmospheric modeling.
Benefits & Applications:
• Optimized Wind Farm Operations: Accurate forecasts improve turbine scheduling,
increasing efficiency and reducing backup energy reliance.
• Smart Grid Integration: Forecasts help stabilize electricity supply-demand balance,
essential for high-penetration renewable systems.
• Climate Risk Mitigation: Enables early warning for severe wind events (e.g., dust storms,
cyclones).
• Policy & Planning: Informs infrastructure investment, regional energy strategies, and SDG-
compliant climate planning.
Use Case Status: Part of a larger ongoing research initiative in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
