2 Sustainable management of WEEE in Argentina: On the road
to a Circular Economy
2.1 Demographic and economic indicators
The Argentine Republic is made up of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (the capital of
the Republic and seat of the Federal Government) and 23 provinces. It is part of the American
continent, between 22° and 55° south latitude. It is bordered to the north by Bolivia (Plurinational
State of); to the northeast by the Republic of Paraguay; to the west by the Republic of Chile;
and to the east by the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, and the
South Atlantic Ocean. It covers a total area of 3 761 274 km , of which 2 791 810 km correspond

to the American continent (including the Falkland Islands) and 969 464 km to the Antarctic

continental territory (including the South Orkney Islands and Austral Islands).
In the world ranking of the Human Development Index (HDI) carried out by the United
Nations Development Programme in 2020, it is ranked 46 out of 189 countries, with a human
development index of 0.85.
Argentina has 45 376 763 inhabitants: 23 103 631 female, and 22 273 132 male. 1
