The KPIs are further subdivided into core and advanced indicators.
Core indicators are those that all cities should be able to report. They provide a basic outline of the
city’s smartness and sustainability – higher levels of performance are generally achievable within
these KPIs.
Advanced indicators provide a more in-depth view of a city and measure progress on more
advanced initiatives.
Details on each indicator are available online in the ‘Collection Methodology for Key Performance
Indicators for Smart Sustainable Cities’.
Each indicator has been chosen through a process of review and input by international experts
and UN agencies, programmes and secretariats to ensure that the data collected support the SDGs
in a local context. City leaders will benefit from these KPIs in terms of strategic planning and the
measurement of their cities' progress towards their individual smart sustainable city (SSC) goals.
The indicators will enable cities to:
• measure their progress over time;
• use the data and insights gleaned as policy tools towards informed policy-setting and decision-
making; and
• Enable analysis and sharing – in order allow for the dissemination of best practices and set the
standards for progress in meeting the SDGs.
