Definition / Percentage of households with a safely managed drinking water service
Description
Rationale / This indicator measures the percentage of the urban and rural population using
Interpretation / safely managed drinking water services, as defined by the WHO/UNICEF Joint
Benchmarking Monitoring Programme. This indicator goes beyond the “basic water supply”
indicator as it has been designed to incorporate an assessment of the quality and
safety of the water people use.
Households are considered to have access to safely managed drinking water service
when they use water from a basic source on premises. The term ‘safely managed’ is
proposed to describe a higher threshold of service; for water. This includes
measures for protecting supplies and ensuring water is safe to drink.
A house shall not be considered to have access to a safely managed drinking water
service when an individual house or group is served by a conduit system built, for
example, of wood, bamboo, or rubber hose, connected directly to a river, well, or to
another house.
An improving trend and higher values are considered positive.
