ITU hosts Telecommunication Development Symposium for Developing Countries to Explore Next Generation Networks
Cisco Systems sponsors Symposium to foster collaboration among global technology leaders

Geneva, 15 November 2006 — ITU will host the 10th international Telecommunication Development Symposium (TDS-06) in Hong Kong, China, 5-7 December 2006 as part of ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006. Information and communication technology (ICT) leaders, including up to 180 Fellows from 90 least developed and low-income ITU Member States, will discuss how ICT can help bridge the digital divide and drive growth in their countries. TDS-06 is being organized by ITU with support from Cisco® Systems, Inc. [NASDAQ:CSCO], exclusive sponsor of the symposium.

As well as being a global showcase for the latest technological trends and innovations, TELECOM WORLD is also driven by ITU’s goal of making communications accessible and affordable to anyone, anytime and anywhere. The Telecommunication Development Symposium plays a central role in TELECOM WORLD’s goal to connect the unconnected and to extend the benefits of ICT to all the world’s inhabitants and, specifically, to least developed countries.

Participants in the three-day symposium will discuss how the use of advanced fixed and wireless technologies can narrow the digital divide, transforming developing countries and helping them compete in the global marketplace. The symposium, featuring keynote addresses and panel discussions with leading authorities on communications and technology from government and industry, will be held at the venue of the ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 exhibition at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong.

Fernando Lagraña, Executive Manager of ITU TELECOM commented, "ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 is where global industry leaders can get a glimpse at the future of technology and see how information and communication technology is changing the way we live. The industry has the potential of benefiting the developing world in ways we hadn’t even deemed possible a few years ago and we must ensure that the future of the industry is shaped by the needs of the least developed and developing world. The Telecommunication Development Symposium aims to help participants share experiences and make the connections they need to drive industry growth."

The programme advisory committee will select speakers that have a solid academic background and significant telecommunication development experience. Participants will include mid-level managers working in policy making, regulation, planning or operations in the telecommunication authorities of ITU Member States and who are keen to acquire first-hand knowledge of the latest developments in telecommunications and apply this knowledge to their own development plans.

"We look forward to further engaging with telecommunications leaders from the world’s developing economies to share information and discuss how improved communications and connectivity can help accelerate their respective countries’ participation in the global economy," said Massimo Migliuolo, vice president of service provider for Cisco Systems’ emerging market theatre. "The TDS-06 programme should foster meaningful discussions and recommendations about the implementation of advanced technologies to increase productivity for business and government. This paves the way for community development and economic growth, and the country transformation that results from both of these progressive areas."

TDS SYMPOSIUM THEME: NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS FOR DEVELOPMENT

Under the theme next generation networks for development, the Telecommunication Development Symposium will look specifically at issues relating to:

  • technologies and infrastructure

  • business viability

  • sustaining an enabling environment

  • Developing countries have made tremendous strides towards increasing connectivity by using fixed, wireless and mobile technologies. At the same time, there is wide consensus that the next phase of networked communications will be based upon Next Generation Network technologies that promise to achieve enhanced connectivity through cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure development and management.

The concept of the Next Generation Network (NGN) covers the transition from current to future packet-based infrastructures, which is essential to take advantage of new opportunities for development and to bridge the digital divide. It spans both the fixed and wireless worlds so that the same services can be delivered no matter what access technology is used — whether it is a mobile device, a fixed network broadband connection or a fixed wireless connection. As a result, NGNs promise to foster the use of communications for greater socio-economic development, including E-education, E-health, and E-government, and enable countries to boost productivity and growth.

Participants and attendees will learn what NGNs look like, which NGN applications can succeed in developing countries, whether existing business and regulatory models will be applicable, and whether developing countries can move beyond existing technologies to a state-of-the-art wireless NGN world. They will also discuss what kinds of handsets and devices will be most appropriate, how end users will pay for broadband services such as IPTV, VoIP and e-health services in an NGN environment, and what kind of NGN policy developing countries should embark upon. In addition, sessions will explore the licensing and legal frameworks for converged NGNs, the changes needed for spectrum management and, above all, what smart decisions policy makers and regulators can make now to be ready for NGN development.

These issues will provide timely inputs to planning ahead in ICT, influencing decisions that will have a profound impact on how we will communicate in the future.
