ITU, Thailand cement agreement to hold next ITU Telecom
event
in Bangkok, 14-17 November
Host Country Agreement signed by ITU Secretary-General and Thai
Deputy Prime Minister in high-level ceremony
Geneva, 17 May 2016 – ITU and the government of Thailand
today formally confirmed arrangements for the holding of the next ITU Telecom
World event in Bangkok this coming November through a special Signing Ceremony
led by Thailand’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT)
and the Royal Thai Government.
One of the world’s key global ICT events for corporates, governments and SMEs,
this year’s ITU Telecom World focus will be on the most effective ways to grow
the digital ecosystem and the key role that SMEs can play in this process. The
theme echoes the Thai government’s commitment to prioritizing support to enhance
local SME competitiveness as a key mechanism in driving national ICT industry
growth.
ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao expressed his pleasure that ITU would once
again collaborate with the Thai government to organize the event, and praised
the country’s strong belief in ICTs as drivers of development, as evidenced by
its welcoming ITU Telecom World to Bangkok for the third time in recent years.
“The signing of this agreement builds on a positive history of hosting very
successful events together. ITU looks forward to working closely with the Royal
Thai Government in the design and delivery of all elements of this year’s event,
including content in the Forum debates and on the exhibition show floor,” said
Mr Zhao. “I am confident that this year’s event will offer a significant
opportunity to move towards the goals of Digital Thailand for the government and
people of Thailand, as well as for the wider south-east Asian region.”
Speaking on the signing of the agreement and the government’s ‘Digital
Thailand’ goal, Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong said: “The new Host Country
Agreement reaffirms the strong commitment between Thailand and ITU to work
closely together in creating a global platform for accelerating ICT innovation
for social and economic development. This strengthening digital entrepreneurship
has moved forward development achievements within a short timeframe. The
successful digital transformation of many countries has resulted in formulating
my government’s goal of ‘Digital Thailand’.”
Thailand’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Uttama
Savanayana, noted that ITU Telecom World 2016 provided “A unique opportunity for
policy makers and regulators, industry leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and
innovators to come together and exhibit innovative solutions, share knowledge
and build constructive partnerships.”
Thares Punsri, Chairman of the Thai National Broadcasting and
Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said it was a great honour for the NBTC to
co-host ITU Telecom World 2016, adding that he is confident that “All Thai
citizens will benefit from the valuable knowledge and technical know-how on
state-of-the-art technology, telecommunications, and innovative solutions from
both leading national and international organizations and industries.”
