More than 300 ICT projects nominated for 2016 WSIS
Prizes
Online voting for selection from 6 February to 10 March 2016
Geneva, 9 February 2016 – ITU has released the list of
projects nominated for the 2016 WSIS Prizes. More than 300
ICT success stories have been included
following a comprehensive review of close to 400 projects by an
Expert Group.
“The WSIS Prizes recognize excellence in the implementation of projects and
initiatives that further the goals of the World Summit on the Information
Society (WSIS), which took place in two phases: Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in
2005,” said ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao. “The 2016 WSIS Prizes also
reflect linkages with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focus on
ICT success stories to leverage achievement of SDGs through the implementation
of WSIS Action
Lines.”
The winners will be presented with an award at the WSIS Prizes ceremony
during the WSIS
Forum 2016, 2-6 May 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The number of projects submitted for the
WSIS Prizes 2016 (now in its fifth edition) has been
steadily increasing over the years. The contest comprises
18 categories directly linked to the WSIS Action Lines
outlined in the Geneva Plan of Action. The contest is open to governments, the
private sector, civil society, international organizations, and academia.
Sharing of best practices was underlined by the UN General Assembly
High-Level Meeting
for the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of WSIS, held 15-16
December 2015 in New York. Best practices in ICT-related initiatives and
projects aimed at implementing WSIS Action Lines and enabling SDGs can be shared
on the WSIS
Stocktaking Platform.
Stakeholders are invited to
vote for their favourite success stories from around the
world. Online Voting started 6 February 2016 and will end 10 March 2016. Based
on the results, winning projects will be selected by the
Expert Group from among the three projects which have received the
most votes.
Follow the process and learn how ICT projects submitted for the 2016 WSIS
Prizes are enabling the
advancement of the SDGs.
