ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, Busan, Korea:
20 October - 7 November: media accreditation closes soon
Accredited media benefit from privileged access to conference inputs
and background briefings for world’s largest ICT policy conference
Geneva, 24 September 2014 — Journalists have just three more
weeks to
submit their online application for media accreditation for
the 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, which will take place in Busan,
Republic of Korea, from 20 October - 7 November 2014. Formal
accreditation closes on 14 October 2014.
The ITU Plenipotentiary is the world’s largest meeting of international
policy makers from the information and communication (ICT) sector. Known as
PP-14, the conference is expected to attract around 3,000 participants,
including Heads of State and around 130 VIPs from over 160 countries, including
government ministers and CEOs. It is held every four years to set the strategic
direction of ITU and to develop policies and recommendations that address the
evolving needs of the Union’s members.
Issues on the PP-14 agenda include digital inclusion and broadband rollout,
broader international cooperation on ICT development, and new strategies to
encourage membership and multi-stakeholder participation. The establishment of
new ICT development goals and targets under a new framework called ‘Connect
2020’ will also be discussed.
A highlight of the conference will be the election of the Union’s five top
executives – the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General, and the
Directors of the Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization and
Telecommunication Development Bureau – as well as other governing bodies of the
Union, specifically ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board. A comprehensive
range of media backgrounders is available
here.
Host country the Republic of Korea is also planning an extensive programme of
tech-focused side events for delegates and media, including a 5G forum, an
exhibition of accessibility technology to aid persons with disabilities, an
e-health exhibition, an expo on cloud computing and another on Big Data, and
Korea’s annual Science & Creativity Festival.
Accredited media will received privileged access to conference
documentation. Formal media accreditation is also essential for media wishing to
attend onsite, and those wishing to participate in online media briefings from
Korea.
