international delegates from public and private sector

ACCREDIT NOW

Geneva, 25 August 2014 —Journalists are encouraged to submit their online application for media accreditation for the 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, which will be held in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 20 October - 7 November 2014.

The largest international meeting of policy makers from the information and communication (ICT) sector, the conference is set to tackle a wide range of issues raised by ITU’s global membership, which comprises 193 Member States and over 700 members from the technology industry, R&D institutions and academia.

The conference, known as PP-14, is expected to attract around 3,000 participants, including Heads of State and around 130 VIPs from over 160 countries, including government ministers and CEOs. Held every four years, the Plenipotentiary determines the strategic direction of ITU and develops policies and recommendations that address the evolving needs of the Union’s members.

Issues on the PP-14 agenda include finding new ways to promote digital inclusion and accelerate broadband rollout, to forge greater international cooperation on ICT matters, and to broaden membership and stakeholder participation. The conference will also look at strategies for assuring continued growth, sustainability and innovation across the ICT ecosystem, as well as practices for further enhancing governance of the organization. The possibility of setting new ICT development goals and targets under the banner of activities dubbed ‘Connect 2020’ will also be discussed.

The Conference will agree the Union’s Strategic and Financial plans for the coming four-year period, and will elect the Union’s five top executives – the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General, and the Directors of the Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization and Telecommunication Development Bureau – as well as other governing bodies of the Union, specifically ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board.

Host country the Republic of Korea is also planning number of exciting, tech-focused side events for delegates and attendees.

Journalists are encouraged to accredit now for this event. Formal media accreditation is essential for media wishing to attend onsite, to participate in regular online media briefings from Korea, and to gain full access to conference documents.
