ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 20 October-7 November:
media accreditation now open
Host country Korea plans extravaganza of ICT side-events and
showcases to complement main conference programme
Geneva, 21
July 2014
—Media accreditation for ITU’s 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference opens today,
as ITU and the Republic of Korea together ramp up preparations for an event the
Host Country is billing as ‘the ICT Olympics’.
The conference, known as PP-14, is the world’s largest gathering of the ICT
policy-making community. It is expected to attract around 3,000 participants,
including Heads of State and an estimated 130 VIPs from over 160 countries.
Delegates will tackle a number of pressing issues, from strategies to promote
digital inclusion and address the growing broadband divide, to ways to further
build international consensus on Internet-related public policy issues. The
conference will also look at possible reforms to the ITU Convention and
Constitution, initiatives to enhance membership and multi-stakeholder
participation, and measures to ensure progress on growth, sustainability and
innovation across the ICT ecosystem.
Held every four years, the conference determines the strategic direction of ITU
and develops policies and recommendations that address the evolving needs of the
Union’s membership, which includes 193 countries, over 700 private sector
companies, academic institutions and national, regional and international
bodies.
The Conference also agrees the Union’s Financial Plan and elects the Union’s
five top executives – Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, and the
Directors of the Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization and
Telecommunication Development Bureaux – who will guide its work over the next
four years.
PP-14 will also feature a wide range of tech-focused side events for delegates
and attendees organized by ITU and Host Country Korea, designed to showcase the
future of the ICT sector. The conference will also consider setting new ICT
development targets under the banner of a series of activities dubbed ‘Connect
2020’.
Journalists are invited to formally accredit now for this important event, which
will play a major role in shaping tomorrow’s Information Society in developed
and developing nations alike.
