ITU recognizes contributions to Information Society

Certificates awarded for government and private sector support to World Summit on
the Information Society Forum

Geneva, 1 February 2013 – ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré today presented Certificates of Recognition to the Administrations of Kuwait, Oman, Poland, Tanzania, Mexico and United Arab Emirates as well as to ITU Sector Members Intel and Hewlett-Packard for their financial contributions to the WSIS Fund in Trust. Additionally, Egypt was recognized for its commitment towards strengthening the implementation of WSIS-related activities, in particular the WSIS+10 review in 2014.

Expressing his thanks for the generous contributions, Dr Touré said, “In the ten years since the first Summit in Geneva, we have witnessed a huge leap forward in the way the world communicates. We have also seen that the ICT sector has not only remained healthy during the recent financial crisis but has sustained the global economy through a difficult period. It is therefore of crucial importance that we continue to push forward with the implementation of the WSIS goals to ensure that people everywhere derive the full benefits from information and communication technologies.”

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), held in two phases in 2003 and 2005, aimed at harnessing the potential of information and communication technology (ICT) to meet the goals of sustainable development and to provide connectivity to very citizen on earth. Several ‘Action Lines’ were set out to meet these objectives and, over the past decade, considerable progress has been made in their implementation. The follow-up of the implementation is an ongoing multi-stakeholder process that includes partner UN agencies and is reviewed annually during the WSIS Forum which meets mid-May in Geneva. The WSIS Fund in Trust facilitates the financing of this process.

Looking beyond 2015, governments, private sector, civil society and international organizations take stock, analyse and plan the way forward taking into account the increasingly indispensable role of ICTs in the area of health, education, climate change, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
