Sri Lanka to host ITU Global Symposium for Regulators
Why regulate in a networked society?
ACCREDIT NOW
Geneva, 12 July 2012 – ITU’s
annual Global Symposium for Regulators, set to meet in Colombo, Sri Lanka from
2-4 October 2012, will look in-depth at the challenge of meeting new national
broadband goals, promoting affordable access and ensuring safe and secure
digital opportunities for all.
The meeting, which has earned a reputation as the pre-eminent global gathering
of the information and communication technology (ICT) regulatory and
policy-making community, is designed to foster cross-stakeholder dialogue
between regulators, policy makers, industry leaders and other key ICT
stakeholders.
Participants will engage in stimulating discussions on a wide range of
compelling issues, including net neutrality, spectrum policy, international
roaming, cloud computing, data protection and privacy, international and
regional IP interconnection, and public-private-partnerships to foster network
investment.
The event is being organized by ITU in collaboration with the Telecommunications
Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), under the high Patronage of Sri
Lankan President H.E. Mahinda Rajapakksa, who will preside over the opening on
Monday 2 October. It will be chaired by TRCSL Chairman Lalith Weeratunga.
This year’s
programme
begins with an interactive High-Level Segment focusing on transnational
regulatory issues in a converged digital era. The first two days of the
symposium comprise the Global Regulators-Industry Dialogue (GRID, 2-3
October), and are open to regulators, policy makers and members of ITU’s
Development Sector. The third day (4 October) is a closed session open to
regulators and policy makers only. The morning session on Monday 2 October is
open to media, culminating in a press conference scheduled to take place at
12:45.
Journalists are encouraged to accredit online now to attend this prestigious
event. Formal accreditation prior to the event is essential to gain access to
the event venue. Please note that accreditation will close on Friday 21
September and that there will be no accreditation onsite.
