Dubai welcomes ITU Telecom World 2012; Next stop Bangkok
ITU Telecom World 2013 will be hosted by Thailand
Dubai, UAE, 15 October 2012 – ITU Telecom World 2012 got off
to a flying start in Dubai with the opening high-level Leadership Summit
yesterday, which set the scene for the panel sessions and debates this week.
At a press conference today, ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré noted
that Dubai is an extremely attractive destination to visit and to do business
in; and both exhibitors and Forum speakers at ITU Telecom World are drawn from
around the world, from developed and developing countries alike.
“ITU Telecom World 2012 plays a vital role in creating awareness across
public and private sectors of the current, irreversible transformation of the
ICT industry and the opportunities and challenges it creates,” Dr Touré said.
“It is a showcase of new inventions, products and services that will
revolutionize the telecommunications and ICT landscape in the future and create
new business opportunities even as new technologies, now literally at our
fingertips, can eradicate poverty, combat climate change, predict disasters,
improve education and agriculture, and provide timely primary healthcare.”
The Chairman of the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Mr Mohamed
Bin Ahmed Al Qamzi, joined Mr Osman Sultan, CEO of du, one of the UAE's largest
telecommunications operators, in welcoming ITU Telecom World 2012 to Dubai.
The Chairman of the ITU Telecom Board, Mr Reza Jafari, joined the hosts in
underlining the importance of events such as ITU Telecom World 2012.
"Collaborative innovations are the foundation of technological advancements
which have characterized human development and transformation. ITU Telecom World
events offer a unique platform for the meeting of ideas and perspectives that is
increasingly critical to the success of our ecosystem which involves all
industry sectors, not just ICT," Jafari said.
ITU Telecom World 2013 to be held in Bangkok
Mr Jafari announced at the press conference that ITU Telecom World 2013 will
be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in autumn next year, continuing ITU Telecom's
commitment to annual events based on the principle of geographic rotation.
Mr Nattapong Seetavorarat, Adviser to Thailand’s Minister of Information and
Communication Technology, welcomed the announcement: “As a state agency
designated by the Royal Thai Government, we are honoured that Thailand has been
selected to host ITU Telecom World 2013 next year. For Thailand, this event will
be an important platform to demonstrate the country’s progress and high
potential in the field of information and communication technology, and to
promote opportunities for business matching and knowledge sharing at global
level, which is fully in line with Thailand’s emerging role as a gateway to the
ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. Having already hosted ITU Telecom Asia in
2008, we are especially delighted therefore to be honoured a second time by ITU.
We are fully confident that ITU World Telecom 2013 will be the best ever.”
