ITU stands by to assist victims of Japan quake
ITU Secretary-General expresses solidarity
Geneva, 11 March 2011— ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré
expressed sorrow at the loss of life, injuries and human displacement as well as
the extensive damage to property and infrastructure resulting from the 8.9
magnitude earthquake that struck Japan today. The earthquake was
followed by a devastating tsunami.
The Japanese Government has been informed of
ITU’s readiness to provide assistance with emergency telecommunications required
in assisting victims of the disaster and in the delivery of logistics. ITU is
also ready to provide support in terms of damage assessment and rehabilitation
of telecommunication networks.
Re-establishing
communications is a critical tool in disaster management to ensure timely
intervention and support for the victims and to assist in rescue and
rehabilitation efforts.
