ITU Signed Two Agreements with the Government of Australia

The BDT Director signed two new projects with the Government of Australia, under the Framework of the MoU between ITU and the Government of Australia.

The project titled 'Feasibility study: Addressing the special telecommunications/ICT needs of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS)', aims to create an enabling institutional mechanism to accelerate digital transformation in the Pacific.

This will be achieved by conducting a situational analysis and needs assessment to identify specific telecommunications/information and communication technologies (ICTs) needs common to the Pacific region, and specifically the beneficiary PSIDS.

The project titled 'Creating a Circular Economy for Electronics and Electricals in Thailand and in Mongolia' is in line with ITU's Programme of Work on Greening Digital Transformation and Creating a Circular Economy for Electronics. It aims to create sound recommendations for a regulatory framework for the governance of e-waste management under extended producer responsibility (EPR) in Thailand and Mongolia.

Given the current regulatory status for e-waste management in Thailand, the project will build on the experiences of previous ITU projects. It will boost the existing steps being taken to regulate e waste in Thailand through the provision of technical assistance to develop a proposal for a sound legal framework, administrative arrangement, and financing mechanism to implement EPR principles in the national regulation of e-waste management. Based on the current system of managing and regulating e-waste in Mongolia, the project will develop a report detailing recommendations for a proposed legal framework for the management of e-waste taking EPR into account. Such coordination may include knowledge sharing between beneficiary countries relating to their e-waste management approaches, which would be achieved through inviting relevant speakers to participate during the respective consultation processes.
