ANATEL contributes additional USD 2.6 million to a development project with ITU

In a ceremony held on 27 October in Busan, South Korea, during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) and the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency, ANATEL, signed a project agreement to enhance the agency's regulatory capacities and competencies.

ANATEL is to contribute USD 2.6 million for the project.

"The Brazilian Government and ITU have had a long-standing relationship since the early 90's,"said Mr Sanou Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau. "Since the structural reform of the Brazilian telecom sector, ITU has been cooperating with the ANATEL on a number of issues, ranging from technical aspects of the regulatory environment to the development of tailored made advanced training programs for ANATEL' staff."

In 2014, ITU and ANATEL concluded a USD 10 million contract for the development of cost modeling for telecommunication services and both institutions are now joining forces to work on new priority areas.

In December 2013 ANATEL contributed USD 1.7 million to the project budget. Since the inception of the project, ANATEL has contributed USD 34.5 million.

"This new contribution from ANATEL reaffirms the Brazilian Regulator's confidence in ITU, and specifically, in the support received from the ITU's Americas Regional Office," emphasized  Mr Jeferson Nacif, Head of ANATEL International Affairs Office. "We have achieved positive results during this journey together. This has helped ANATEL to realize its vision for the Brazilian Telecommunications Sector and for the whole society."

This additional contribution will include cooperation on ANATEL's strategic planning and will cover the enhancement of its competencies on the internal process as well as human and financial resources.
