Official Visit of ITU Secretary-General, Dr. Hamadoun Touré to Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, 19-21 May 2014

The visit of the ITU Secretary-General, Dr. Touré was organized at the invitation of Mr. Pavel FILIP, Minister of Information Technology and Communications of the Republic of Moldova with the main scope to participate in the ITU Forum for the CIS and Europe  "Shared use of Infrastructure as a Tool to promote Development of Broadband Networks"  and discuss the modalities of strengthening cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the ITU and the trends in the national ICT development.

Dr. Hamadoun Touré took part in the official opening of the ITU Regional Forum for CIS and Europe on Shared Use of Infrastructure as a Tool to Promote Development of Broadband Network and in the first part of the Session 1 on  Conducive regulatory Framework for a Favorable Environment Establishing. At the official opening Dr. Touré delivered a greeting to the Forum participants.

Dr. Touré visited the Moldova Technical University. Dr. Touré delivered a short speech to the students and told of ITU. Afterwards, Dr. Touré visited the University laboratory, the observatory, and the technology park.

The University Rector Mr. Bostan informed Dr. Touré that the University in cooperation with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication planned to open the Centre of Excellence node to train specialists, in particular for ICT, and that some companies had already consented their participation in the project.

Dr. Touré confirmed the ITU interest in this project and requested the Area Office for CIS to work on this issue with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication and provide relevant information to the Headquarter.

Dr. Hamadoun Touré took part in Session 3 of the Forum dedicated to the issue of scarce resources. At the end of the Session, Dr. Touré addressed with a speech to the Forum participants. In particular, Dr. Touré thanked the Minister, Mr. Filip, for organization of the event and for invitation to the Forum and appreciated the high level of the event (attended by representatives of 8 CIS and 3 non-CIS countries), the substantial agenda and topical presentations.

Dr. Hamadoun Touré gave an interview to the Moldovan mass media.

Also, within the framework of the visit, Dr. Touré had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Igor Corman, Chairman of the Parliament  of the Republic of Moldova, to discuss the bilateral cooperation and ICT development in the Republic of Moldova.
