The purpose of this session is to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the digital transformation of employment. 

This session will take the form of a panel discussion with ILO specialists. The discussion will show that digital technologies - including AI - can both improve and harm job quality depending on how they are used, as well as discuss digital transformation in the context of employment policies.  Examples of ongoing work and research will illustrate the discussion. 

The event will include an interactive discussion between experts on decent work and the digital economy. Questions and comments from the audience will be captured and integrated into the conversation. 

 

Panellists
Ms. Janine Berg
Ms. Janine Berg Senior Economist ILO

Janine Berg is Senior Economist with the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Since joining the ILO in 2002, she has conducted research on the economic and social effects of labour laws as well as provided technical assistance to ILO constituents on policies for generating jobs and improving working conditions.  She is the author of several books and numerous articles on employment, labour market institutions and the digital transformation of work. She received her Ph.D. in economics from the New School for Social Research in New York, USA.


Mr. Sher Verick
Mr. Sher Verick Adviser to the Deputy Director-General ILO

Sher Singh Verick is Adviser to the Deputy Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. Prior to this position, he was Head of the Employment Strategies Unit, ILO, Manager of the International Training Centre of the ILO and Deputy Director of the ILO Decent Work Team for South Asia and Country Office for India. He has also worked for the UN and various research institutions in Europe and Australia. He holds a master’s degree in development economics from the Australian National University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Bonn. Since December 2004, he is a Research Fellow of the Institute for Labor Economics (IZA). He has published in a range of journals and has authored or edited a number of volumes, including the Transformation of Women at Work in Asia: An Unfinished Development Agenda (2016). 


Ms. Maria Prieto
Ms. Maria Prieto Employment and Future of Work Specialist ILO Moderator

Maria is an Employment and Future of Work Specialist in the ILO’s Employment Policy Department (EMPLOYMENT/EMPLAB). In her current position, she works on the interrelated strategic topics of employment policies, youth employment and digitalization and coordinates the ILO's Inter-Departmental Action Group on Youth Employment.  Maria has more than twenty years of professional experience in the United Nations (ILO and UNDP) in positions that included thematic areas such as employment policies, youth employment, digitalisation, local economic and social development, urban development, small and micro enterprise  development, the informal economy, and infrastructure development.
