Digital inclusivity: Connecting the next billion
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
Session 145
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) envisioned a digital future where everyone can experience the benefits of digital technologies. Over twenty years ago, an ambitious agenda was set, prioritizing goals such as closing the digital divide and a commitment “towards multilingualization of the Internet” in the Tunis agenda in 2005. Significant progress has been made in this area, with two-thirds of the world’s population now online . However, valuable lessons have been learned regarding overcoming challenging obstacles and finding effective solutions. Simply having access to the Internet does not ensure digital inclusion. Some individuals are still offline for various reasons, such as lack of capacity or inability to navigate online in their language due to continued technical barriers.Efforts to connect the next billion should acknowledge the importance of digital inclusivity.
Join us for an engaging panel discussion on the strategies being undertaken by the technical community, private sector, and international organizations to foster an inclusive digital environment that embraces linguistic and cultural diversity. Gain insights into innovative approaches and initiatives aimed at enhancing the DNS and technology infrastructure to accommodate a broader spectrum of languages and scripts, as well as promoting accessibility and affordability of Internet access.
