Based on the need articulated by the community, UNESCO and ICANN are organizing a session to enhance multilingualism online. UNESCO works to promote the use of multilingualism in the Cyberspace and ICANN has been focusing on the promotion of Universal Acceptance for this purpose. UNESCO and ICANN are organizing this interactive session on meaningful multilingual access through Universal Acceptance to set priority actions needed to promote cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and access to the local content.  The interactive discussion will bring together the WSIS, ICANN and UNESCO communities engaged in initiatives such as Internationalized Domain Names, Universal Acceptance, the International Decade of Indigenous Languages and the World Atlas of Languages to identify a few key priority actions to promote inclusion, interoperability, accessibility and awareness on the use of languages in cyberspace.


Marielza Oliveira
Marielza Oliveira Director for Partnerships and Operational Programme Monitoring, Communications and Information Sector UNESCO

Dr. Marielza Oliveira (Brazil) is the UNESCO Director for Partnerships and Operational Programme Monitoring, Communications and Information Sector, since February 2021.

From 2015 to 2020, she was Director of UNESCO Beijing, covering the 5 East Asian countries. Previously, she was the global Results Manager (data scientist) for UNDP, where she also held positions as country manager for a portfolio of Latin American countries (2001-2015). Previous positions also include Systems Engineer at the US Army Construction Engineering Research Lab/USA Corps of Engineers (US, 1987-1991, where she was responsible for AI systems development), senior consultant at Fundacao Dom Cabral (Brazil, 1995-1999), and Director of Executive Education at Ibmec Business School (2000–2001). Dr. Oliveira holds a Master of Science in Finance (1990) and a Ph.D. in Business Administration (1995) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA


Edmon Chung
Edmon Chung Member of Board of Directors ICANN

Edmon Chung is a social innovator and entrepreneur. Edmon currently serves as the CEO of DotAsia Organisation, serves on the Executive Committee of Internet Society Hong Kong (ISOC HK), the Board of Make a Difference (MaD) Institute, and heads the secretariat for the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF). Edmon served also on the founding board of the Internet Governance Forum Support Association (IGFSA), continues to support its secretariat, cofounded the annual Hong Kong Kids International Film Festival (KIFF.Asia), and participates extensively on Internet governance and social innovation matters. Edmon is an inventor of patents of internationalized domain names (IDN) and email addresses technologies, and has served on many global IDN related technical and policy groups, that made possible the introduction of multilingual domain names and email addresses on the Internet. Edmon won the Most Innovative Award in the Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurship Award in 2001. In 2000, Edmon was selected by The Globe and Mail as one of the Young Canadian Leaders.

Between 2006 and 2010, Edmon served on the ICANN Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council, between 2010 and 2012 on the ICANN At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC), and between 2006 and 2011, as an elected member of the Elections Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the Information Technology Subsector. Edmon has a Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Engineering from the University of Toronto. He was nominated to serve on the ICANN Board by the Nominating Committee in 2021. His term will expire at the Annual General Meeting in 2024.


Anil Kumar Jain
Anil Kumar Jain Chair Universal Acceptance Steering Group UASG

Anil Kumar Jain is Chair Universal Acceptance Steering Group. He is also the CEO and longtime board member of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). Having spent 36 years in various telecommunication roles, he is an expert in Internet, broadband and telecom sectors. Throughout his career, he has been associated with BSNL, MTNL and the Department of Telecommunications, India, and also serves as Chair of India’s Internet Governance Forum, Chairman of India’s Multilingual Committee and as a member of India’s Internet Resilience Committee.

Internationally, Anil is Vice Chair of the IDNccPDP4 Working Group of Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) and Chair of the IDN ccPDP4 Working Group. He is also Chair of a working group formed to design strategies for the Asia Pacific Top-Level Domain Association (APTLD). Finally, he is member of the IDN EPDP Variant Working Group of Generic Names Supporting Organization (GSNO) and also serves as liaison officer between ccNSO and GNSO.


Marc Durdin
Marc Durdin Keyman Project Manager SIL International

Marc Durdin is a member of SIL International and is the team lead for the open source cross-platform Keyman input method project. Keyman runs on all major desktop and mobile operating systems as well the web, and currently supports over 2,200 languages. Marc first became interested in discovering solutions to multilingual keyboard input while living in Laos in the 1990's and subsequently wrote the first version of Keyman to support Lao. Marc has worked in Australia, Thailand, Laos, Papua New Guinea, and currently lives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, working out of the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia.
