How technology could help to save lives during crisis

The session will present the initiatives currently conducted by UNDRR, ABU/WBU  and ITU-T in the field of technologies and learning experience that could help in preventing disasters, in reducing effects of natural and human provoked disasters and DRR.

The Moderator, Giacomo Mazzone - senior journalist expert in DRR, sustainability and climate change, SG Eurovisioni- will discuss of these topic in a conversation with Jeannette ELSWORTH, Chief, Communications, Advocacy, Knowledge Management and ICT at UNDRR, the UN branch in charge of preventing disasters; and with Mrs. Mythili MENON, project officer, ITU-T.

The key words for this conversation will be : Climate change and how to tackle it / reduce its consequences through technology; Early Warning Systems, How to bring the right information/alert to the concerned users in the shortest possible time.

Giacomo Mazzone has 30 years’ experience in the information, sport and international relations sectors, trained as a journalist, with a great deal of experience in international companies and organizations (RAI, Euronews, Eurosport, and latest EBU). He also has worked for all traditional media (press, radio, general interest TV) but also new media (all-news channels, Internet portals). Expert in European and international negotiations. in 2021 has been Global project manager at UNDRR, following the development of the project UNDRR-WBU to train media professionals to DRR Disaster Risk Reduction in the countries affected by Climate Changes


Mythili Menon
Mythili Menon Project Officer at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ITU

Mythili Menon works as Project Officer at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the domain of standardization for new and emerging technologies. She serves as the Advisor of the ITU/WMO/UNEP Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Natural Disaster Management (FG-AI4NDM) and the ITU/FAO Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) for Digital Agriculture (FG-AI4A). Mythili possesses a strong background in environmental science, standardization, and the policy frameworks underlying sustainable development issues. Between 2015-2017, she worked for the ITU-T Study Group 20 on ‘Internet of Things and Smart Cities and Communities’ and ITU-T Study Group 5 on ‘Environment, Climate Change, and Circular Economy’. Previously, she worked as the Standardization Lead at Mandat International for various EU Horizon 2020 projects. Mythili holds a Masters in ‘Standardization, Social Regulation and Sustainable Development’ from the University of Geneva. She completed her Bachelors in ‘Environmental Science and Chemistry’ from University College Utrecht in the Netherlands. The areas relating to the sustainable development goals, artificial intelligence, blockchain, intelligent transport systems, disaster management, data management, smart cities, and IoT are of enduring interest to her and she has co-authored several publications on these subjects.


Jeanette Elsworth
Jeanette Elsworth Chief of Communications, Advocacy, Knowledge Management and ICT UNDRR

Jeanette is a communications professional with more than 20 years' experience, including twelve years leading communications teams at the UN. She started her career in broadcast journalism at the BBC, where she worked on some of the UK’s best respected programmes, including the Today Programme, Moneybox and Crossing Continents on Radio 4, as well as From Our Own Correspondent on the World Service. Jeanette was responsible for posting one of the Radio 4’s first “podcasts” (MP4s of your radio programme on a webpage, anyone?) before realizing she wanted out of journalism and out of the UK. She head to her childhood home of Nairobi and spent two years in a policy role at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before joining UN-Habitat as their Press and Media lead.

Jeanette is currently Chief of Communications, Advocacy, Knowledge Management and ICT and leads communications campaigns for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, World Tsunami Awareness Day and the Early Warning For All Initiative alongside WMO.
