In this process, FIWARE has been leading the Smart Data models initiative that defines open-
licensed data models defines to enable actual data interoperability between diverse systems. The
Smart Data Models mission statement is (Smart Data Models, 2023):
“The mission of the smart data models is to promote interoperability could be to provide shared,
standard, data models that can be used by a wide range of organizations and systems to facilitate
data exchange and interoperability.”
Numerous open-data models have already been defined, including several that are specific to
Smart City and IoT applications (Smart Data Models, 2023).
3.4 SAREF
The Smart Applications REFerence (SAREF) is an initiative of the European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI). Its purpose is described as follows (SAREF, 2020):
“The Smart Applications REFerence (SAREF) ontology is a shared model of consensus that facilitates
the matching of existing assets in the smart applications domain.
SAREF provides building blocks that allow separation and recombination of different parts of the
ontology depending on specific needs.”
