Abstract :

Many connectivity initiatives in underserved, remote, and rural areas struggle to maintain long-term operations due to minimal consideration to establishment of economic foundations that will extend beyond initial deployment. This contribution examines long-term economic sustainability as a critical factor influencing the success of remote connectivity and digital development projects. Drawing on two-years of in-depth research, documented experience and practical examples, including research and development for the recently launched Economic Micro-Hub (EMH) model in Vanuatu, this contribution highlights practical approaches that integrate connectivity with local economic activity, inclusive service delivery, and community-centred governance. The contribution aims to inform ongoing ITU-D Study Group discussion on universal connectivity, economic aspects of ICTs, consumer empowerment, accessibility, and to support global community initiatives.
