Page 5 - Implementation of the ITU-T International Standards for the Sustainable Management of Electrical and Electronic Equipment: On the road to a circular economy in Argentina
P. 5
Preface by the Basel Convention
Regional Center for South America
(Argentina)
Today more than ever, governments and society
as a whole need to tackle holistically the pressing
environmental problems that are affecting our
planet: pollution from chemicals and waste, climate
change, biodiversity loss, desertification, land
degradation, and droughts, are among the most
important.
Regarding pollution, a substantial aspect is to
address the environmentally sound management
of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and
its waste (WEEE) through the implementation of
sustainable life cycles and the Circular Economy.
The analysis and internalization of existing global
standards in this area into national regulations or
procedures are to be considered and promoted.
This document reflects a Case Study carried out in Argentina within the framework of the
Project on Electrical and Electronic Waste for Latin America (PREAL), in association with the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), whose main objective was the analysis of ITU-T
L.1031 Recommendation "Guideline for achieving the e-waste targets of the Connect 2030
Agenda", as a contribution to strengthen the WEEE management systems focused on the
Circular Economy.
Based on the information gathered, it will be possible to develop public policies and strategies
to strengthen the national WEEE management system and to make progress on sustainable
management by implementing strategies aimed at strengthening capacities and raising
awareness of the value chain stakeholders, especially in recovery centres and informal recyclers.
