Consequently, it is not recommended that cities simply seek to replicate solutions implemented
elsewhere. Smart Cities are cities that take full advantage of the creativity of their residents and
local businesses. Relying on replication of smart interventions misses the opportunity for cities to
innovate locally. For cities in developing country contexts it is particularly important that in-depth
knowledge of local city conditions, culture, resources and practices be harnessed to find novel and
workable solutions to local problems. Examples of such simple, smart interventions are included
in Chapter 3.
