Save the Planet and Humanity?
Global, regional and national policies play a key role in efforts to combat climate change. At the national and regional level, ICT regulators, producers and telecommunication operators increasingly need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption.
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can improve environmental performance and address climate change across the economy. The biggest gains for smarter environmental and economic strategies and applications are in power generation and distribution, buildings and transportation – three areas which contribute to the bulk of greenhouse gases. Further environmental benefits of ICT applications are evident in areas such as water management, biodiversity protection, pollution reduction.
This session will provide, inter alia,

Role of ICTs in renewable energy (solar, power, wind, desertification and water)
Role of ICTs in monitoring, predicting, detecting natural hazards, alerting, and responding to disasters.

Session 6: Adaptation and
Climate Change Impact
Adaptation refers to measures to address changes already occurring as a result of global warming. These changes have a negative impact on ecosystems and on human habitat affecting access to natural resources such as drinking water and farming. As agriculture is likely to suffer the biggest impacts, sound adaptation processes are required to sustain agricultural production and food system as a whole.
IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, stressed the ability of decision-makers to manage information as an important factor determining the chance for a community to adapt to climate change.
ICTs have great potential and use in collecting, analyzing, planning and disseminating information on climate change and this is one of the reasons why the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can play an important role in tackling climate change.
This session will look at how ICTs can help in adapting to the new environmental challenges, especially in developing countries. It will also look at national climate change adaptation planning, early warning systems, prevention, risk reduction issues, and technological issues such as the use of remote sensing.
