The Commonwealth ITU Group (CIG) was established in September 2002 during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in which the 54 Commonwealth member countries sought to organise themselves in supporting the appointment to key positions for the various ITU elected officials including the 5 Elected officers, members of the Radio Regulation Board (RRB), and representation on the ITU Council.

Since then, the CIG have had senior Government officials and Regulators meet on a regular basis to establish a common set of objectives to be achieved at various conferences and meetings of the ITU on International Telecom Regulation, Policy, Radio Spectrum, and related matters, as well as type approval, standardisation, typically addressing the concerns of member states in all aspects of telecommunications development and implementation.

After a decade of CIG activities and geographically covering Commonwealth member States stretching from Canada /Caribbean to Europe/Africa to Asia and the South Pacific; CIG has become an important single large group (of 54 Countries) to influence matters on all aspects of ITU work. The FTTH Council Asia-Pacific is a non-profit organization established in 2005. Since 2005, MTN has been operating in Sudan connecting people and integrating societies. MTN Sudan has over 3 million subscribers and its network coves all of Sudan and provides all the 2G and 3G services. MTN-Sudan is currently market valued as a 650 million dollars investment and Larrycom for Investment owns 15% of it. In 2002 Larrycom for Investment won the license of the second GSM operator in Sudan jointly with a Yemeni business group. In October 2004, Investcome group acquired 85% of the shares in the company owing the license so as to operate it as "Areeba" their well-known brand at that time. Areeba went commercially alive in July 2006. Sentech Ltd. is a State Owned Enterprise (SOE) operating in the broadcasting signal distribution and telecommunications sectors and reporting to the Minister of Communications. Sentech began as a technical division of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (“SABC”) responsible for signal distribution services of the Corporation. Southern African Development Community

The Southern African Development Commission (SADC), was established in 1980 in pursuant of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Treaty and the provisions of the SADC Protocol on Transport, Communications and Meteorology. Until 1999, the association was known as the Southern Africa Telecommunications Administrations (SATA). From its inception, SATA was a forum for public operators of fixed land telephony networks, by virtue of the sectoral composition at the time. However, in response to sector changes in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the current SATA Constitution was revised in May 2005 to open up membership to other players in the sector. Full membership is now open to both fixed and mobile cellular operators who own a telecommunication network regardless of whether they are a public or a private enterprise. Other ICT stakeholders such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Equipment Manufacturers/Suppliers may join SATA as Associate Members only as approved by the SATA Executive Board.
