OVERVIEW OF THE INTERNET IN SUDAN

Introduction

1. Sudan is the largest country in Africa with an area of 2.5 million sq Km and population of about 25 million. The country shares borders with nine African countries. Economic potentials include large area of fertile land, water resources, large number of livestock and underground resources like oil.

2. In view of economic reform, privatization of telecommunication took place aiming at the development of the private sector. Hence the National Telecomm Corporation is established in late 1996.

3. The service provider is the Sudanese Company for Internet services (SUDANET) which commissioned its services in 1998.

4. Required Informations:

a. Number of subscribers 2000
b. Percentage of users
    30% commercial (Business)
    20% Academic, Research
    50% Government, organisations
c. Number of ISPs: One, Now there are three applications waiting for licensing.
d. Bandwidth: 512 k bit for down link.
256 k bit for up link.
e. The general policy and regulation are defined in order to ensure and encourage investors through fair and open pro-competitive market. New service providers are expected to join in very short time.
