Testing equipment is getting ever smaller and ever more sophisticated. On display you will see the Ameritec Model 401e, a hand-held instrument, with an LCD touch-screen interface, which can be used to test voice and data lines. The Ameritec AM5eXT-200 can be used to test basic subscriber voice telecom lines, all the way up through high-speed ISDN data lines (Ameritec Corporation). The INTERCEPTOR series of testers facilitate the installation and maintenance of GSM/PCN base station equipment, perform network tests, and provide comprehensive analysis and stress testing of SDH/PDH networks and equipment. The FIREBERD series is used for measurements from bit error rate analysis to frame relay testing (Telecommunications Techniques Corporation).
The installation, maintenance and restoration of fibre-optic cable networks is made easier with the TekRanger Mini-Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, which allows network providers to find splices, connectors or breaks at the push of a button (Tektronix). And optical return loss testing can be performed extremely quickly using the FIBERSCAN 1000 (Telecommunications Techniques Corporation). Other optical tests can be performed by a remote fibre test systems on display (Ando Electric Co., Ltd., Fujikura Ltd.).
PCS and cellular networks can be tested using the EXP-2001, a user-configurable modular RF drive test system, or the MSAT-2000, a portable RF measurement system. Combined with a pen computer and PenCAT data collection and analysis software, the MSAT-2000 is suitable for indoor measurements (Eurofon).
Automated in-orbit test systems for complex satellite systems will also be on display (Comsat).
Amongst many of the exhibitors demonstrating on-line services, come and see an impressive navigator for use in interactive television set top-boxes for Video-on-Demand and Homeshopping (Logica). Other companies will be showing on-line services on the Internet which allow clients to reach more people while saving both time and money (Fujitsu Ltd., Telstra Corporation), or which allow clients local access to the Internet in countries where the Internet is not currently widely used (IDT / International Discount Telecommunications).
Come and see Open TV, a platform-independent solution for delivering interactive services to homes via existing cable or satellite networks (Sun Microsystems), the Mediaplex server, which provides Video-on-Demand, Pay-per-View, homeshopping, and other interactive applications, and which allows automated ad insertion for cable TV operators (Digital Equipment Corporation), and the Media Server, which delivers services such as news on demand, interactive weather, video electronic mail, on-line music CD shopping, and the recording and playback of real-time video conferences (Oracle Corporation).
Also check out: Mobile Office, which allows you to send GSM short messages, paging messages and electronic mail, access the Internet, and use on-line information services (Telecom Finland Ltd.); Netrider, a service which provides communication solutions for remote workers (Digital Equipment Corporation); MCI Business, a package which uses a single interface to send or receive E-mail, fax, or wireless paging messages (MCI Communications Corporation); and a new range of image processing systems (Ricoh Company Ltd.).
A wide variety of security systems are on show, including idip!-security, a monitoring security system which keeps moving objects under surveillance and activates safety measures by remote control (ITK GmbH), and GSM-IMAGE, a low-power video transmission system for video surveillance which allows images and information to be transferred over GSM mobile telephones (Telecom Finland Ltd.). An intruder detection system based on image processing and transmission (Teldat SA) and an inexpensive video surveillance system providing a high quality picture sent from remote, secure or dangerous locations (Tandberg AS) will also be on display.
