"Connect!" is the theme of TELECOM 95, and at the exhibition we will be seeing just how interconnected the world has become over the last four years. As the telecommunications, computer and entertainment industries converge and strategic alliances are formed, TELECOM 95 will define the new boundaries for the 21st century marketplace. A market of increasing opportunity, spurring a mass of new wealth creation. An integrated industry at the hub of the political, economic and social structure of the globe.
The need for better, cheaper and faster telecommunications is bringing a dynamic response from business, with a wide range of new and enhanced products and services. From the basic telephony and data transmission provided by public telecommunications authorities, to the ever-widening range of value added services, voice services, and private sector services, it is clear that telecommunications is developing more quickly than ever before. And the benefits of fast-moving telecommunications technologies will be apparent to all who visit this exhibition.
The mobile market is experiencing dramatic growth, with the number of subscribers having more than tripled, to over 50 million, since TELECOM 91. Come and see the most effective mobile communications systems and the ever wider variety of advanced mobile services on show at TELECOM 95 - and check out the measuring and testing equipment available for testing the biological effects of the electromagnetic fields generated by cordless and cellular phones (EMC Fribourg SA).
At the show an impressive Universal Personal Telecommunications system with global standards will be unveiled, offering subscribers complete mobility via whichever phone service they chose and allowing access via any route. This will be the first UPT system ready to be sold directly to other operators (Ericsson). Also on demonstration will be IMT 2000, the new digital mobile telephony standard being developed under the auspices of the ITU for global application (International Telecommunication Union).
An interactive PC animation will also be demonstrated which shows an entire GSM network onscreen, allowing the operator to control network growth, monitor quality and introduce new services (Alcatel).
Also come and see a complete trailer-mounted GSM/DCS 1800 base station with telescope tower, shielded electronic equipment, antenna panels, microwave links and appropriate accessories. This is rapidly deployable, and can be used for the emergency replacement of disabled systems or to increase the capacity of existing systems (Système Ingénierie Telecom).
A large number of mobile communication applications, including GSM, DECT and new TETRA applications will be on display (German Pavilion). Look out for a demonstration of Audio Plus, wireless voice enhancement software functioning on an echo cancellation platform. The software addresses the unique combination of acoustic and network echo encountered on digital cellular networks (Coherent Communications). You will also be able to see a system which uses PHS radio links to provide an integrated wireless office communication system (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.). Also see Sellplan, a client-server based system for mobile operators' software (Digital Equipment Corporation), and the new Personal Handy-phone System - PHS - launched in July which brings universal communication even closer (DDI Corporation).
Also on show will be compact, broadband, all digital, software configurable base stations capable of processing multiple protocols (Airnet Communications Corporation), a TMN Q.Adaptor product for managing non-TMN compliant network elements (Euristix Ltd.), and a mobile office connected to GSM to allow you to work anywhere, anytime (KomSa Kommunikation GmbH), as well as a new wireless packet data system known as Radex which offers communications services either for customers or for internal company use (MicroLogica SA).
Come and see the first commercial CDMA digital cellular system, STAREX-CMX (LG Information & Communications Ltd.) and the FUBA MCR 1800, a mobile communications repeater that ensures the coverage of shadowed residential areas (Fuba Hans Kolbe & Co.). Also see a number of products and systems demonstrated in the field of mobile and cellular switching. These are used in the Aircore Switching System from TeCoRe Inc., the Mobile Satellite Telephone System, from Westinghouse Communications, and the Value Added network Exchange System from Homisco (Natural Microsystems NV).
Another pair of interesting products on display are Mobicentrex, the first exchange that covers both mobile and wired telephones, and Mobileimage, software which facilitates the transmission and reception of moving images between two mobile telephones (Telecom Finland). Also on display is CHIR+ software used for radio network design, optimization and operation, and offering field strength calculations, interference and combined network coverage analysis, and ENDI/DENDI, administration tools for the co-ordination of DCS1800 or GSM900 base stations (L&S Hochfrequenztechnik GmbH).
As fraud - and attempts at fraud - increase, the sophistication and reliability of billing systems becomes more important than ever. Systems to collect data from remote sites, to capture and transmit call records from telephone switches, and to monitor and adminster data collection in real time will be on show at TELECOM 95 (Alcatel, American Computer & Electronics, Hewlett-Packard SA). Also look out for the Model 950 Local Toll Billing System which provides detailed call recording, meter pulse collection and local call multi-metering. Backup and restoration of an exchange database can be provided by the Magnetic Tape Emulator system (Innovative Data Technology). Subscriber credit can be controlled in real time by distributed computer systems using the ICT Revenue Management System (ICT Group). And Customer Care Broadband Services combines mainframe functionality with UNIX flexibility, enabling customer service representatives to quickly and effectively handle inquiries (Andersen Consulting LLP). See also Multilink Plus, planning and adminstration software for radio links in the 400MHz to 96GHz range, which offers tools for licensing and billing, as well as for checking link performance and interference. The LS-Administrator spectrum management system isalso being displayed (L&S Hochfrequenztechnik GmbH).
CABS 2000 is a sophisticated, easily modifiable billing system for any mobile service (Sema Group), MARS is an administration and billing system for mobile networks (PSI AG), DATOS is a flexible application for billing and customer and network administration (Detecon GmbH), Jupiter is an administration, billing and customer care solution that lets operators run multiple networks - digital, cellular, paging, fixed - in a single system, and BATS is a billing system designed for multimillion subscriber cellular networks, with flexible tariffing and multiservice billing (Digital Equipment Corporation).
Finally, come and see DBS, which offers a non-stop accounting and billing solution for multi-network, multi-vendor environments. DBS supports data and voice services, and is user-configurable to meet individual network customers' needs. (Nexus Telecom AG).
A variety of new, enhanced AMPS/ETACS and CDPD handsets will be on show at TELECOM 95, with the emphasis on the evolutionary trends for the future which will support mass market growth, and which have links to ever smaller radio base stations (Ericsson, Philips Communication Systems). You will also be able to see a new range of lightweight telephony headsets designed for comfort and efficient hearing (LEM Industries).
You will be able to see a range of digital hand-sets with multiple functions, including data and fax transmission, at the show (Ericsson, Philips Communication Systems). New ultra-slim GSM handheld terminals with outstanding transmission and reception quality will also be on display (Alcatel). And a new handset, using the DCS 1800 standard, has been launched in conjunction with the NATEL City short range system in Switzerland, which has significantly lower toll charges than traditional cellular systems (Swiss Telecom PTT).
Creating the necessary software for digital handsets is a barrier to many companies, who will be interested to see a full suite of licensable software components for Phase 2 GSM/PCN/PCS terminals. Also on show will be a licensable reference radio design for GSM 900 (Technology Partnership Ltd.).
Don't miss a revolutionary new digital handset that allows both data and handwriting to be transmitted in addtion to voice, via the cellular network. A range of sophisticated new GSM handsets is also being debuted (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
Although not strictly digital handsets, there will also be self-contained satellite telephones, the size of computer notebooks, on display, which can provide voice, fax and data communication (California Microwave Inc. , Inmarsat).
As security becomes ever more important in the world of telecommunications, the use of SIM - smart cards - is increasingly widespread, especially in the world of mobile communications. The many applications and potential applications of smart cards will be on display at TELECOM 95 (GEMPLUS). The NATEL SIM Card Platform service adds to the technical capabilities offered by the traditional SIM card in terms of both database access and terminal location (Swiss Telecom PTT). And a smart card reader/encoder will also be on show (Philips Communication Systems).
Smart telephone account charging cards with international telephone access, fixed communication circuit network access and reduced charge traffic facilities will also be on show (Marconi SA), along with a new range of GSM Phase 2 SIMcards (Schlumberger Technologies), and a range of smart card operating systems for GSM phones (Solaic).
And don't miss Dialto, an indoor card-operated payphone which is easy to use, discreet and fits into any site. Dialto can be connected into on-line or off-line systems as well as PABXs, and can also be used for radio links (Monétel SA).
Come and see Pointel, a telepoint system that allows cordless telephones to be connected through radio bases using the CT2 standard, along with the Twig cordless handset which can be used in areas equipped with Pointel radio bases (Dassault Automatismes et Télécommunications). Also, don't miss the 73MR Rural Radio, which combines advanced DAMA technology and point-to-multipoint cellular architecture to bring reliable, high-quality wireless telephone access to rural areas at low cost (MPR Teltech Ltd.), or a new digital in-house cordless phone which connects up to seven handsets to one home base station (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
A whole range of new DECT cordless telephones will also be on show (Philips Communication Systems, Topcom NV), as well as applications such as Intellicell which reduce interference (Arraycomm, Inc. ).
Automatic vehicle pinpointing for surface transport companies is provided by new global positioning systems which allow increased efficiency, mobility and operational planning (Marconi SA , Philips Communication Systems). Also on display are wristwatch type micro-GPS receivers which have all-in-view receiving capability from eight satellites, and a PCMCIA type II GPS sensor capable of interfacing with PC-AT computers (Japan Radio Co. Ltd.). And don't miss the latest intelligent transportion systems based on the Japanese VICS model (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
A whole range of new antennas and related products will be on display at TELECOM 95, including the "Premium" GSM Glassmount antenna; the "Micromag" magnetic base; a new combined frequency flexible roof antenna for GSM and AM/FM radio (Panorama Antennas Ltd.); the Allgon Ultra, a robust and aerodynamic glass mounted antenna; the Allgon power PCN, a universal booster for 1800 MHz PCN telephones (Allgon Mobile); and a remote antenna kit for relocating LYNXX antennas up to 15 metres from the LYNXX unit (California Microwave Inc.). See also the cross polar antenna. Based on the technology of cross polar diversity, it compresses the performance of two space-diversified sector antennas into a single panel (Alan Dick & Company Ltd.).
You will also be able to see the Air Mini Glass, a small, modern, car-mounted antenna for digital communication in the 900MHz to 2800MHz range, and an antenna compensator which compensates for any loss introduced by the RF cable (KomSa Kommunikation GmbH).
On demonstration will be the Terrastar-M Model 9826A, a portable Inmarsat-M terminal with antenna that provides two-way global digital telephone, fax and data communications. Point the high-gain antenna and you're ready to communicate (Scientific Atlanta).
Smart antenna software will also be on show which automatically adapts to changes in the RF environment, subscriber usage and interference levels (Arraycomm, Inc. ).
As well as antennas themselves you will also be able to see a range of antenna towers and equipment enclosures. Self-supporting structures up to 1,000ft tall can be used for mounting antennas, while environmentally controlled enclosures from 2 x 2ft to 24 x 48ft can be used for housing any type of broadcasting or telecoms equipment (ROHN).
Services such as call forwarding and data transmission are now offered with the expanded TELEPAGE service (Swiss Telecom PTT). And the first POCSAG pagers based on global standards will be a highlight of the show (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
Companies and PTTs are delivering on the promise of the "Information Age" with multimedia systems and services. Demonstrations at TELECOM 95 will include solutions for the management and exchange of information in any format, whether it be data, voice, text or image, and regardless of technological, geographic or organizational boundaries.
The Home Communications Centre, which combines a range of telephone, fax and computer features on one line, will be demonstrated at the show (Digianswer A/S), as will a new broadcasting service over ATM which offers Video-on-Demand, desktop videoconferencing and multimedia mail (Telia AB). And Video-on-Demand, interactive on-line information services and videoconferencing will all be on show as part of an impressive ATM demonstration (International Telecommunication Union).
Look out for the Profile Professional Disk Recorder which uses optimized compression to manipulate digital video and audio and create the picture quality of Betacam-SP. Profile simultaneously records and plays back across multiple channels and accommodates multiple standards and formats (Tektronix). New Communications and Computer integration technology - the C&C concept - will be demonstrated in a new multimedia system (NEC Corporation). Also look out for the Call Port desktop audio conferencing system which provides full duplex, hands-free, top quality, interactive audio (Coherent Communications), and Imtran, a digital uncompressed closed ring fibre optic transmission system for video, audio, data and telephony (Ipitek). Also see a new ISDN PC-based Collaboration Conference System which can display moving pictures on colleagues' screens for task collaboration and data sharing (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
Multimedia MUSE, which uses multiple subNyquist sample encoding, will demonstrate a multimedia information service on an HDTV data channel. HDTV is ideally suited to wall-hanging Plasma Display Panels, and you will be able to see the progress that has been made in this area at the same time (NHK [Japan Broadcasting Corp.]).
ATM Express and TINA are two services being demonstrated at TELECOM 95 which provide multimedia communication over ATM links. Multimedia Conferencing, Multimedia Mail and Multimedia Retrieval are provided (Swiss Telecom PTT, Telia AB, Telefónica España, Unisource, France Telecom ). And check out a new video-on-demand system being demonstrated (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.).
Also look out for Hot Java, the new Internet browser that brings animation to the WorldWide Web (Sun Microsystems); the Virtual Bank Branch, which offers an array of banking services (Andersen Consulting LLP); a range of education-entertainment software (Fujitsu Limited); and a range of digital cable services for home entertainment (Telstra Corporation).
Advances have been made with a new broadcasting system, ISDB - Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting - which provides advanced multimedia services. The HDTV image program is called "Future TV 201X", and you can find out more about it at TELECOM 95 (NHK [Japan Broadcasting Corp.]).
A range of servers providing interactive services and networking, financial applications packages, information repositories, WorldWide Web interface kits, digital newsgathering systems and mobile information-access networks will also be on display (Hitachi Ltd., MCI Communications Corporation, Oracle Corporation).
And look out for Oracle Interactive Television, which includes services such as interactive weather, homeshopping, education and video-on-demand. Also see Oracle Media Server applications demonstrated, such as customized news, CD purchasing, and video electronic mail (Oracle Corporation).
Facsimile solutions are increasingly sophisticated. Among a wide range of products and applications on show you can see ITK FaxWare, which allows efficient fax transmission and reception between Novell networked workstations (ITK GmbH & Co. KG).
A wide range of fax servers and fax software will also be on display (Appel Elettronica SRL, Marconi SA, Telindus Networks NV,Telstra Corporation), as well as a whole variety of fax machines for both professional and private use (Philips Communication Systems, Topcom NV). Fax encryption can be provided by the Surity 3700/3710, which can be used with Group 3 fax machines (Gretag Data Systems AG). And users of GSM phones can use the FX1 mobile fax solution to provide the benefits of paper based facsimile communications (KomSa Kommunikation GmbH).
You will also be able to see Rfax FRS multi-line fax cards, which meet the increasing requirements of fax applications such as fax broadcast, universal mailbox, fax-on-demand, fax router, Email fax gateway and fax invoicing within computer telephony systems (Rhetorex Inc.).
A number of interesting videophone and videoconferencing applications will be on display, and several come bundled with a range of value added services from conference storage and retrieval to information service gateways. All the facilities required for face-to-face business meetings, including wide band audio, full motion video and interactive graphics will be on display (Aethra S.R.L. Telecom, German Pavilion, LG Information & Communications Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., MCI Communications Corporation, Philips Communication Systems, Telstra Corporation).
Come and see WAVE, the first interactive video system to allow the simultaneous real-time linkage of up to eight different sites via ATM switches. A modular, turnkey solution, WAVE provides video and audio quality comparable to broadcast television (MPR Teltech Ltd.). You will also be able to see the Access25 Dynamic Bandwidth Manager, a multiport inverse multiplexer that provides intelligent connection management for variable bandwidth or "bursty" data applications such as videoconferencing (Telco Systems, Inc.).
The ProShare Personal Conferencing family includes a full range of data and video conferencing products, including document conferencing and application sharing software (Intel). On show this year there will also be the Smart Board electronic whiteboard, Smart Conferencing for Macintosh data conferencing system, and Smart 2000 Conferencing software which allows Windows users to share and annotate information on their screens in real time (Smart Technologies Inc.).
A high performance videoconferencing portfolio is also on show, with systems ranging from personal executive videoconferencing to equipment designed for larger meetings with up to eight participants on each side (Tandberg AS).
And a public videophone with fax, based on a fibre optic network and ATM exchanges, will be available for visitors to try out for themselves. The videophone features a built-in video camera, colour LCD touchscreen, fax/scanner and IC card reader. (Japan Telecom Co., Ltd. ).
While great strides are being made in new technologies, there is still a great deal to be gained from existing ones. RAYPLEX is a family of Digital Pair Gain systems which maximize the power of copper networks using environmentally sealed remote terminals available for aerial or underground use (Raychem). See HDSL C-CAP, which allows for transmission of 2Mbps signals on standard telephone pairs at distances of up to 6kms with a very low error rate and without the need for repeaters, even on poor quality lines. The product conforms to ITU-T recommendations (Castor Telecommunications).
New ADSL and HDSL systems will be on display that support speeds of up to 6Mbps (Datentechnik Intercom AG, Orckit Communications, Westell Europe Ltd.). Also on display is JNA GOLD AS200, a transmission access platform with a scaleable architecture providing a broad range of services, including leased data, fax and multimedia (JNA Telecommunications Services), US2G, a synchronization supply unit designed for SDH/PDH digital telecommunications networks where the frequency reference needs a very high accuracy (Gillam SA), and a range of license-free spread spectrum products for use in congested areas where licensed frequencies are not available (California Microwave Inc.). See also a range of DSUs which connect routers to broadband WANs without the expense of the vendor's interface card (Metrodata).
Backup for leased line services using ISDN dial up links is increasingly in demand to guarantee service quality. Come and see a demonstration of the system supplied to Deutsche Telekom. Also on show will be DIANA, a new transmission technology for the local loop which allows an additional 64Kbps data channel to co-exist on ISDN basic rate lines and subscriber access to operate simultaneously and independently of the ISDN (Datentechnik Intercom AG).
Several access routers and transmission systems with error elimination, echo-cancelling devices and sophisticated audio-processing systems, and cross-connect systems will also be displayed (Coherent Communications, Philips Communication Systems), along with Digital multiplex radio equipment designed as an extremely compact, medium-capacity PCM-4PSK system for operation in the 2-7.5GHz bands (Japan Radio Co. Ltd.).
There will also be a number of types of optical amplifiers on display, such as an EDFA repeater, a compact amplifier module, an erbium doped fibre on-reel assembly and an erbium doped fibre laser (Mitsubishi Cable Industry). In the same domain you can see The OMUX Optical terminal system, a compact, fully modular, high-capacity fibre optic transmission system for digital trunking, digital loop, dedicated network, mobile network, and other applications. The HyperLYNX-50 Broadband Transmission System takes advantage of ATM's powerful transport capabilities and can multiplex both cell- and frame-formatted data over a single transport facility (Telco Systems, Inc.).
As networks become more complex, switching mechanisms become more sophisticated. Several programmable and ATM ready switches will be demonstrated at the show (Excel, Inc., OST [Ouest Standard Télématiquel]), along with a one-to-one protection switch generating the same signal for two links (Philips Communication Systems), a range of narrowband/wideband switches (Ericsson), the CM-1 four port ATM edge switch which provides the necessary link between ATM applications, LANs, PBXs and the WAN fabric (Metrodata Ltd. ),the FUBA Omniswitch, a non-blocking four port ATM switching matrix with a 622Mbps throughput per channel (Fuba Hans Kolbe & Co.), and a network built with the homogeneous Matracom 6500 Multiswitch product line serving from two to 30,000 lines (Matra Communication). The ECOM U series multiprotocol switch/concentrator allows you to create numerous backbone, transit and concentration data network solutions (OST [Ouest Standard Télématiquel]]). And microkernel technology for switching applications will also be on show (Chorus Systems).
Look out for the C-DAX 256, a compact, modular, non-blocking DAX which can provide up to 256 2Mbps ports cross connecting at 32 or 64Kbps (Castor Telecommunications).
Also check out the high performance of the GIGAswitch/ATM, which offers up to 52 ATM connections continuously over 10Gbps (Digital Equipment Corporation), and a whole range of new optical switches and mercury static relays (C.P. Clare International NV).
As ATM becomes more prevalent, a wide range of converters and multiplexers will be on show. The W/ATM PremisWay multi-service multiplexer (Digital Link Corporation), the Orion 4000 Broadband Access Multiplexer (Larscom Inc.) and the ACE 2000 ATM Access Concentrator (RAD Data Communications, Israel - National Pavilion) offer advanced ATM networking functions including non-ATM to ATM conversion, cell multiplexing and ATM / inverse-multiplexing. And the ITK atmjet interfaces LANs and PABXs directly to ATM, bringing ATM quality directly to any connected workstation (ITK GmbH & Co. KG). The IGX is a new 1.2 gigabit ATM switch, available in both a 16 and 32 slot configuration. The IGX offers enterprise and value-added networking (VAN) customers the ability to migrate all wide area traffic from time-division multiplex to ATM (StrataCom Ltd.). And the Forerunner family of ATM switches will also be on display. These switches deliver ATM conectivity to LAN workgroup, LAN backbone and LAN/WAN internetworking applications (Fore Systems).
Come and see telecooperation in action, as each day the Paris editorial staff of the International Herald Tribune produce their TELECOM Special at the exhibition, with direct access to the Paris editorial computers via an ATM network. And visit the Cinema of Tomorrow as live video images are transmitted via an ATM link from outside the exhibition into the hall in first-rate cinema quality (Alcatel, International Herald Tribune).
Another impressive ATM demonstration can be seen over the new Geneva to Singapore link, which at 18,400km is the world's longest ATM connection to date. You will be able to see video clips live from Singapore and have the opportunity to videoconference with friends in the "garden city" (Singapore Telecom).
The Synchrony series of products range from entry level products for small remote sites to ATM-based multi-service WAN backbone switches. The ATM Access Unit is an ATM switch which accommodates services for voice, video, and data with constant and variable bit rates (Ascom AG). ATM connections can also be allocated a specific amount of bandwidth in each direction using the eReS reservation system (Swiss Telecom PTT). An experimental platform based on ATM technology will be demonstrated (France Telecom, Sophia Antipolis SAEM), along with intercontinental ATM-based services which are under development (Teleglobe Canada Inc).
A new family of video servers using ATM technology will be deployed across all the Sun workstations and servers on display (Sun Microsystems). And the Onstream CS6000 ATM Access Concentrator fills the gap between ATM central office switches and local ATM switches to reduce the cost of ATM access (Onstream Networks - T3plus Networking).
The DataNet ATM service, which has ATM nodes in 14 of Finland's cities and was greatly praised in the media last year, sets an example of cost-based real world pricing for ATM (Telecom Finland). A number of other products can be seen which will enhance your ATM system. The ATM-LAN Switch is the first one which has multi-channel switching capability. The entire 16X16 switching functionality has been put in a single ASIC with a total aggregated throughput of 2.4 Gbps. The LG-Broadband Terminal Adapter can connect the non ATM terminal to an ATM network. And STAREX-ATM brings ATM capabilities into LAN, time sensitive and multimedia services. (LG Information & Communications Ltd.). Also see the ATM DSU family of products and the CM-1, a four port ATM access edge switch (Metrodata).
Finally, come and see an interesting and impressive ATM demonstration which explains not only how ATM works, but also shows the vital role played by the ITU in the creation and adoption of the standard (International Telecommunication Union).
A number of new modems will be on show. REXIS is a fault-tolerant modem designed for maximum line availability and comes with advanced features and system management capability (Teldat). The ASTER 4 V.34 modem uses a proprietary DSP technology and - as its name implies - is based on ITU recommendation V.34 (Telindus Networks NV). A new range of high performance modems will also be on show (Orckit Communications).
Come and see a wireless modem which uses the 2.4GHz frequency band for spread spectrum modulation to achieve point-multipoint or point-point full-duplex communication at speeds up to 512 Kbps where wired links are impractical (Cylink).
A tailored solution for cost-effective customer access can be provided by the JNA GOLD FeederMUX.E1 range of remote service terminators and/or multiplexers. For high performance, low-cost service terminators, see the JNA GOLD FlexRate Network Terminating Unit (JNA Telecommunications Services).
On show you will also see a LAN/WAN Optimizer which provides real time, high performance network data compression and connects to any bridge, router, SNA channel extender or controller (Telco Systems, Inc.).
Also see Intermezzo, an alphanumeric DTMF smartphone which allows users to send alphanumeric data in DTMF over a telephone line (Digiline), and M4000GSM, the first system terminal for GSM phones (KomSa Kommunikation GmbH).
Equipment suitable for all environments will be on show at TELECOM 95. The family of Corro-Shield resistant jacks and cords are especially designed for hostile environments. A platform for developing new national networking applications, called vBNS, will be demonstrated at TELECOM 95. vBNS allows massive amounts of voice, data and video information to be transmitted at nearly four times the current technology speeds, and will increase to over 600Mbps by 1996 (MCI Communications Corporation).
Also see the Solaris 2.4 multi-threaded operating environment which provides robustness and advanced networking capabilities (Sun Microsystems), the X.SAFE LAN access system which provides personal authentication and privacy of information in transit over PSTN, ISDN or leased lines (Racal Electronics PLC), and LX 10 LAN extension access product, which has Ethernet and token ring interfaces, transparent LAN bridging, and on-board simple network management protocol software (Onstream - T3plus Networking).
Come and see MCI Connect, a mail system that allows both LAN-based and cc:Mail users to send and receive E-mail, fax, telex, and graphical attachments transparently (MCI Communications Corporation).
A number of systems that integrate E-mail and EDI into fax and telex, and provide secure electronic document transport, will also be on show (GE Information Services, Telindus Networks NV).
At TELECOM 95 you will be able to see ChannelWorks, a product which provides full 10Mbps Ethernet transport over the spare bandwidth available on TV cable networks (Digital Equipment Corporation). Also see the Ethernet adaptors and TCP/IP software which are included with all Sun hardware systems (Sun Microsystems), and The Rockwell 2300 Fast Ethernet Adapter which can provide 10Mbps or 100Mbps perfomance on PCI-based computers, or the Series 2200 FDDI Adapters which offer high-speed connections for PCI Local Bus servers connected to FDDI backbones (Rockwell Network Systems).
A number of interesting wireless networks, digital wireless local loops and point-to-point systems will be on show (Arraycomm Inc. , California Microwave Inc., Diva Communications Inc., Orckit Communications, Philips Communication Systems). Digilink is a fixed wireless/wireline technology that combines SDH based microwave system with small high quality digital switches (ICT Group). Wireless LAN adapters operating on the 2.484GHz in the ISM band, using the direct-sequence spread spectrum modulation system will also be on display (Japan Radio Co. Ltd.). And the CMLink family of digital microwave radios combine robust performance, low-cost ownership and state of the art technology in a package offering RF frequencies from 18 to 55GHz, and capacities up to 34Mbps (Continental Microwave Technology Ltd.).
Also on display will be a remote Ethernet wireless bridge for full-duplex interconnection of LANs between buildings, and a radio system which uses spread spectrum modulation techniques to provide a point to point link capable of 2Mbps operation (Cylink), and a new range of wireless network equipment using microwave radio links operating in the 1.5GHz to 38GHz range (Sodielec).
Come and see two products which allow users to remotely command the HF-SSB transceiver equipment functions. The Pat 25 HF-SSB Telephonic Radio Remote can connect via a standard two-wire telephone line through a free CO line of a PBX to all extensions of an organization, while the Pat 23 VHF/UHF Telephonic Radio Remote offers similar functionality (Bax Ingeniera Electrónica).
At TELECOM 95 you will be able to see a whole range of cabling solutions in both copper and fibre optic for both private industry and national infrastructure (Acome, Sumitomo Electric Industries). Look out for WF-H and WFLEX coaxial cables, with corrugated copper outer conductors, which show very low loss and are available in sizes from 3/8" to 1-5/8" (Mitsubishi Cable Industries).
Progress towards the all-optical telecommunication network will be demonstrated at TELECOM 95, with high density voice, data and video travelling at light-speed in a digital form. Photonics will play a key role in 21st century telecommunications (Siemens A/S, Pirelli SPA). A comprehensive range of fibre optic equipment will also be shown, including the Stand FiberNode linear, a broadband fibre optic CATV analolgue receiver, the Penestal Mount FiberNode broadband fibre optic receiver, the Ipitek Analogue Return Path Receiver, the FiberTrunk modular fibre optic DFB laser transmiiter and receiver system, and FiberSentry monitor and control package for CATV fibre optic networks (Ipitek).
And Fibre Infrastructure System Technology - FIST - is an end-to-end system applicable to point-to-point or point-to-multipoint networks using a modular physical fibre management system (Raychem).
Cantat 3 is a direct high-performance, high-capacity, fibre optic cable system which supports a wide range of applications including B-ISDN and ATM services. Canus 1 is a system which extends SDH connection to the US (Teleglobe Canada Inc.). And OPTOCLIP II is the cheapest high-performance fibre optic interconnection (Compagnie Deutsch).
At the show you will also be able to see demonstrations of fibre optic fusion splicers, optical LAN products, optical amplifiers and the laying of Air Blown Fibres (Fujikura Ltd., Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Cable Industries, Sumitomo Electric Industries).
A number of exhibitors are planning on demonstrating their Ethernet systems and related services at TELECOM 95.
An innovative 16Mbps fibre optic token ring will demonstrate the interconnection between Appelnet intelligent nodes (Appel Elettronica SRL).
Amongst a range of interconnection and networking products for structured cabling systems in buildings, a new category 5 structured wiring system is being displayed at TELECOM (Viking Connectors). You will also be able to see the OCS 300 Open Cabling System which allows information to be sent at up to 300 MHz over shielded twisted pair cables. This highly screened LAN cabling system uses standard RJ45 Modular Jacks as the passive interface to the active components (Telegärtner Karl Gärtner GmbH).
Optical amplifiers provide an essential systems contribution in the long distance network. Optical amplifiers - which overcome signal attenuation without interrupting optical continuity, and which extend the reach of the all-optical telecommunications network - will be on show at TELECOM 95, as will future-proof optical network solutions (Pirelli SPA).
A range of products for CATV systems will also be on show, providing higher transmission rates and allowing conventional CATV systems to be upgraded to interactive communication systems (Fuba Hans Kolbe & Co.).
And a new OTN - Open Transport Network - family of fibre optic transmission systems will be launched at TELECOM 95 offering bandwidths at 36, 150 and 600Mbps. Dual, counter rotating rings ensure that the system is not affected by cable breaks (Siemens Atea)
A large range of new cabling accessories for both fibre optic and traditional cabling systems will be on show at TELECOM 95. OPTIPACK is a high performance mini coaxial connector which features a floating optical contact system, keyed mating, optical ferrule, low reflection and low insertion loss. The EC is an internationally recognized fibre optic interface, and its cone/sphere alignment principle offers precision positioning of components in all three axes. A wide variety of more traditional coaxial connectors will also be on display (Radiall). Look out for a new series of optical switches (C.P. Clare Corporation NV).
Grounding solutions for traditional cabling systems and a new Cable Fault Locator will also be on display. The fault locator can be used for all types of metallic cables (CATV, Telephone, Data, Power), has a 10km range, and features auto programming, 12 memories and a zoom facility (Comtec GmbH).
A wider than ever variety of satellite equipment and services will be on show at TELECOM 95. Start by seeing the demonstration of smart satellite software that shows exactly how all existing satellites interact with each other enabling operators to choose the best available orbit and frequencies (International Telecommunication Union).
The creation of several new satellite systems that will provide global handheld mobile telephone services by the end of the decade is already underway, and at TELECOM 95 there will be a series of important announcements backed by ambitious demonstrations and presentations (Globalstar).
Come and see the widely used Spacebus family of satellites, ranging from 900 to 4440kg, on show from Europe's major satellite manufacturer (Aerospatiale Espace & Defense).
A range of advanced satellite communications uplink equipment will also be on show, ranging from a remote control and monitoring system to a variety of advanced video receivers, modulators and data converters, and IBS, IDR and SMS-compliant digital converters and modems (Advent Communications Ltd.).
Come and see video demonstrations of how satellite communications can be used in the field of telemedicine, and how mobile satellite communications can help provide vital links in an emergency or natural disaster disaster (Globalstar, Inmarsat-P). There will also be a display of data messaging, telephone and PC communications for mobile offices and portable satellite terminals (Inmarsat).
Come and see demonstrations of frame relay over satellite, DTH service quality, and live transmissions of the Reuters' global VSTA-based financial, business and media network services (Intelsat).
Also look out for a complete turnkey service which meets customers' needs for applications as diverse as LAN interconnect via satellite through to emergency communications systems (Advent Communications Ltd.), and see the demonstration of Satexpert, a coherent, intelligent software tool for on-line control of complex satellite systems (Aerospatiale Espace & Defense).
The satellite-based digital Demand Assigned Multiple Access service - DAMA-Net - which uses "pay-as-you-use" capacity on Intelsat satellites to provide economical, high-quality communications, and succeeds the PACT network, will be demonstrated at the show (Intelsat, Scientific Atlanta, Telstra Corporation). The Norsat interactive two-way VSAT system and the use of portable terminals on Inmarsat M will also be shown (TELENOR). And several satellite-based telephony airborne satellite systems with uninterrupted communications will be unveiled at TELECOM 95 (Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., Inmarsat, Racal Electronics PLC).
At TELECOM 95 you will also be able to find out about Videocast and Radiosat - satellite broadcasting services - which provide fixed up-links and leasing of satellite channels, and Videocom, which provides satellite services for distance learning (Marconi SA). Also demonstrated will be the Odyssey personal communication satellite system which will provide personal voice, fax, and paging services by satellite to subscribers worldwide, and the Orbcomm system which will involve putting a constellation of 26 satellites into low earth orbit to provide low cost, two-way data, paging and position-determination services to subscribers (Teleglobe Canada Inc.).
Finally, come and see the Rockot Launcher, which is able to transport 1100kg satellites to a circular orbit of 2,000km or 550kg satellites to elliptical orbits of 10,000km / 500km (Eurockot Launch Services).
Satellite telephones the size of computer notebooks will be on display which can serve as public payphones in rural and remote communities unreachable by other telecommunications networks (California Microwave Inc., Inmarsat, Scientific Atlanta).
The first satellite flyaway system for digital or analogue video, telephone, data and audio which is able to offer dual C/Ku-band uplinking will be on show, along with the world's most advanced multi-media mobile satellite communications facility, fitted with the latest digital disk-based editing system for fast-breaking sound and vision communications. Also see the NewSwift, the world's smallest D-SNG flyaway system (Advent Communications Ltd.), and the Inmarsat-B, -C, Mini-M and pager terminals (Japan Radio Co. Ltd.).
On the ground there is an ever wider range of options available. Look out for TSAT 2000, a cost effective and reliable low data rate transmission system which is responsive to the demanding communication needs of automatic teller machines or a point of sales network (Normarc AS).
A huge range of satellite terminals, components and services will also be on display, from the MULTI-LYNXX System, which provides sufficient simultaneous voice, fax, and data capability to satisfy the international thin route communications requirements of companies operating in areas having inadequate telephone systems, to state-of-the-art earth stations and networks (California Microwave Inc.).
The latest global-access mobile satellite telephones on show weigh only 9kg, and a telephone for voice, fax, and data transmission that weighs only 2.6kg is currently at the design stage, and due for release in 1997 (Nera AS).
The Maritime Mobile Service provides a broad range of communications facilities - and the Autolink system permits ship-to-shore calls using a combination of transmission methods (Marconi SA). New equipment for voice, fax and data communications for mariners will also be demonstrated (Inmarsat), along with the MariStar-M Model 9821 Inmarsat Mobile Satcom terminal which provides global, two-way telephone, fax, and optional data communications for vessels over 35ft long (Scientific Atlanta).
As the telecommunications, computing and entertainment industries converge, you will be able to see new equipment in the field, including the MTS100 Compression Transport Stream Analyzer, which analyzes MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 digitized and compressed video, audio and data transport streams (Tektronix Inc). Also don't miss the preview of the Electromagnetic Field Analyzer, a new instrument that measures the electrical field isotropically [in three dimensions] and displays the spatially-independent field strength - while it has always been relatively easy to measure electromagnetic fields, this device allows you to measure electrical ones accurately for the first time (Wandel & Goltermann GmbH & Co.).
Electrical and electronic equipment needs to be tested and assessed before it can be placed on the European Market, and an Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Service will be on show which monitors voltage fluctuations, discharges, emissions etc. The Electrical Safety Testing Laboratory tests electrical equipment against EC directives, and the Telecommunication Terminal Equipment Testing Service provides conformance testing for terminals (Cetecom). Also see the attest family of automated PSTN conformance test systems for TE and PABX (Delicom AG), and the testers that are covered by "the SURE concept", which has been designed for the supervision, controlled maintenance and prevention of overvoltage in all kinds of networks (Socrat Equipments).
Extremely high volumes of traffic can be load tested to determine break points on ATM switches and networks using VISTA (Ameritec Corporation). And precision television test signals can be generated using the TG2000 Signal Generation Platform (Tektronix Inc). Additionally, a range of Frame Analysers operating at 2Mbps and 8Mbps will be on display (Sodielec), along with Itex, a tool that supports all phases of the creation of a TTCN Test Suite for conformance testing of an implementation (Telelogic AB).
A new generation of network quality test equipment will be on show in the Finland National Pavilion including the MS Wanderer for GSM/DCS networks and the Air Interface Monitor for AMPS/D-AMPS (Elektrobit). Another test device on show is a new subscriber traffic simulator, which can be controlled by PC to simulate traffic from 32 to 128 subscribers (Inventel Co. Ltd.).
A wide variety of both general and specific testing equipment will also be on show. Mirabel is a measurement system for detecting and locating faults on LAN, telex, leased or ISDN lines (Dassault Automatismes et Télécommunications). EVA provides functional and load traffic testing; OSQAR is a handheld transmission quality measuring tool; the MAT series provides ATM traffic expertise on PDH and SDH links; SAPHIR gives global statistics about PABX activities; and the AROMAT series provides traffic and efficiency statistics and network performance indicators (Clemessy Electronique). And a number of testing devices will be on show for locating cables, whether single conductors, cable pairs or large bundles, and whether they are below or above ground (Progressive Electronics).
On display will be multi-purpose test equipment including call and load generators and equipment for the simulation, monitoring and stress-testing of all wire-based GSM interfaces (Ameritec Corporation, Tekelec Airtronic GmbH). A range of GSM testing and control systems will also be demonstrated (Sintel AS, Wandel & Goltermann GmbH & Co.).
Portable test equipment will be shown for the simulation and analysis of the major ISDN interfaces. Up to four may be accessed simultaneously. Also featured will be a self-contained portable field tester for troubleshooting SDH/PDH networks, and a portable UNIX-based tester featuring any combination of ATM, FDDI, Ethernet, SMDS, ISDN, Token Ring and WAN (X.25, Frame Relay) networks (Tekelec Airtronic GmbH).
Several products are on display for testing conformance to the SDH, PDH, and ATM/SONET standards, and for providing Fast Ethernet analysis (PLLB Elettronica SPA, Siemens Atea, Tektronix Inc., Telecommunications Techniques Corporation, Wandel & Goltermann GmbH & Co.). And signalling and digital network analyzers will be on show that can be used to check the performance of analogue, digital, GSM, SS7 and ISDN networks and V5 interfaces (Ameritec Corporation, Ando Electric Co., Ltd., X-Net Communication Products).
Protocol analyzers do not have to be separate hardware boxes - NexusTRACE does it all in software, using an existing network management workstation to offer full-featured remote port diagnosis and troubleshooting (Nexus Telecom AG).
Testing equipment is getting ever smaller and ever more sophisticated. On display you will see the Ameritec Model 401e, a hand-held instrument, with an LCD touch-screen interface, which can be used to test voice and data lines. The Ameritec AM5eXT-200 can be used to test basic subscriber voice telecom lines, all the way up through high-speed ISDN data lines (Ameritec Corporation). The INTERCEPTOR series of testers facilitate the installation and maintenance of GSM/PCN base station equipment, perform network tests, and provide comprehensive analysis and stress testing of SDH/PDH networks and equipment. The FIREBERD series is used for measurements from bit error rate analysis to frame relay testing (Telecommunications Techniques Corporation).
The installation, maintenance and restoration of fibre-optic cable networks is made easier with the TekRanger Mini-Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, which allows network providers to find splices, connectors or breaks at the push of a button (Tektronix). And optical return loss testing can be performed extremely quickly using the FIBERSCAN 1000 (Telecommunications Techniques Corporation). Other optical tests can be performed by a remote fibre test systems on display (Ando Electric Co., Ltd., Fujikura Ltd.).
PCS and cellular networks can be tested using the EXP-2001, a user-configurable modular RF drive test system, or the MSAT-2000, a portable RF measurement system. Combined with a pen computer and PenCAT data collection and analysis software, the MSAT-2000 is suitable for indoor measurements (Eurofon).
The megohmmeter RL2200 is used for testing telecommunications cable insulation under 50 and 500 V up to 30,000 M and can measure loop resistances and AC/DC voltages. For testing LAN cabling the TACTIS 805 performs tests of continuity, voltage, insulation, near-end crosstalk, attenuation and length on 4- and 8-pair links, to international standards. In addition, the MINIPALM cable fault locator can find insulation faults up to 50M on telephonic and low voltage cables (AOIP Instrumentation).
Automated in-orbit test systems for complex satellite systems will also be on display (Comsat).
Amongst many of the exhibitors demonstrating on-line services, come and see an impressive navigator for use in interactive television set top-boxes for Video-on-Demand and Homeshopping (Logica). Other companies will be showing on-line services on the Internet which allow clients to reach more people while saving both time and money (Fujitsu Ltd., Telstra Corporation), or which allow clients local access to the Internet in countries where the Internet is not currently widely used (IDT / International Discount Telecommunications).
Come and see Open TV, a platform-independent solution for delivering interactive services to homes via existing cable or satellite networks (Sun Microsystems), the Mediaplex server, which provides Video-on-Demand, Pay-per-View, homeshopping, and other interactive applications, and which allows automated ad insertion for cable TV operators (Digital Equipment Corporation), and the Oracle Media Server, which delivers services such as news on demand, interactive weather, video electronic mail, on-line music CD shopping, and the recording and playback of real-time video conferences (Oracle Corporation).

A wide variety of security systems are on show, including idip!-security, a monitoring security system which keeps moving objects under surveillance and activates safety measures by remote control (ITK GmbH & Co. KG), and GSM-IMAGE, a low-power video transmission system for video surveillance which allows images and information to be transferred over GSM mobile telephones (Telecom Finland). An intruder detection system based on image processing and transmission (Teldat) and an inexpensive video surveillance system providing a high quality picture sent from remote, secure or dangerous locations (Tandberg AS) will also be on display, along with a number of universal security systems (Appel Elettronica SRL).
Wireless fraud is increasingly common, and a range of new software applications to combat this will be shown at TELECOM 95, including knowledge-based fraud management software, able to detect cloning via adaptive deceptive mechanisms and to analyze calling patterns (Digital Equipment Corporation). A number of new network security products, including SecureLAN and SecureX25 will also be on show (Cylink), along with PASS, a Public Access Security Server offering powerful but unobtrusive network-wide intelligent access services (Nexus Telecom AG).
Data encryption is a booming area of the security business, and SecuriCrypto provides top security against illicit interception of on-line data in transmission using a 128k private key and a smart card. The SecuriVoice SV2000 encrypts voice and data, and the SF1100/32/64 fax encryptor prevents line-tapping and provides secure storage of incoming messages (Business Security). Digital signature authentication and a range of Gretacoder encryptor systems and security solutions will also be on show (Gretag Data Systems AG).
The latest technology and the implementation of modern cryptographic algorithms and key management systems can guarantee information and communication security. On show will be the newest applications in the field of information security, including EDP, and network security for Email, Notebooks, Laptops, Mailboxes and PCMCIA, ISDN, and Link Encryption for up to 45 Mbps (Crypto AG).
Internet security is an increasingly hot issue. A complete suite of network security offerings will be on display, from screening tools and end-to-end coding to firewalls (German Pavilion, Sun Microsystems).
A number of low-cost security tokens will also be on display which provide coded identification of callers to voice response units for applications such as direct banking, homeshopping and tele-payment (Digiline).
As services and tariffs increase in complexity, guides and directories are increasingly useful. There are also a number of applications available that help calculate pricing and tariffs. Tarifica Europe is a comprehensive manual covering European telecommunications tariffs and services, which reduces complex tariff structures into an easily readable form. The Tarifica Pricer is an easy to use PC software tool which calculates the costs of analogue and digital leased line tariffs on either a national or an international basis. Also look out for the ATM Product Directory (OmniCom PPI Limited).
An interesting variety of both traditional and multimedia Directory Assistance applications will also be demonstrated at TELECOM 95, along with a Management Information System, an inquiry support for TELECOM operators database, and a Multifunctional Operator System. The Intelligent Voice Peripheral performs all voice-processing applications and controls their architecture (pc-plus Informatik GmbH). And a huge range of CD-ROMs will be on show, too.
